Does anyone know if Princeton will start issuing more 'likely letters' in February/March now that there is only regular decision?

they have in the past?
what do they look like and what do they mean?

In the past they only sent them to athletes. A likely letter basically says "Dear Applicant, Thank you for applying to Princeton University. Based on your talents and academic record, we want you to know that it is likely that you will be admitted to the class of 2012..." etc etc.

so this year they are sending them too everyone they they think are highly qualified? not just athletes?

I'm not sure -- it was a question.

The likely letter we received says that, unless there is a change in performance or character, you will be issued an admittance letter in late March. D is a recruited athlete but has stats at the 75th percentile. Most athletes I know were not able to be recruited due to low stats.

Yeah Likely letter = admittance, unless you're arrested

I have a question - no horse in this race, just for a friend. Do you have to have submitted your application to get a likely letter?

Yes. As far as I know admissions must review your application before a letter is sent to you.

If you are a recruited athlete you submit everything early. D had application, recs, scores, completed application, etc. to Princeton in mid-October. 2 weeks later she got the letter.

so they don't send them to any one who is not an athelete

also if you apply regular decision
can you still get one before the march announcement date

And as a recruited athlete they let you know to submit your app early, is that right? Even if the university doesn't have an early application program any more?

i was recruited to princeton and received my likely letter at the end of october. i had to submit my full application before receiving the letter, which i got in the mail about a week after I applied.

How did you know that you needed to submit your application - the coach told you?

The coach tells the recruit to submit the application. I think that they will be sending likely letters to other students in the RD round also. From what I have read they have sent them to top students in the past. If a likely letter is not received that doesn't mean that you weren't accepted. I am not exactly sure how they determine to send them.

I heard all kids who would be ED types get a super likely letter. It just means adcoms have to suck up more in their letters to kids they want. And probably call the guidance people or school administrators to suck up. This ought to be entertaining.

I have heard nothing of the sort.

i was in constant contact with the coach during the recruiting period, so once I decided that Princeton was my favorite school, she told me when/to whom i should submit my application.
