IIRC 2 internationals here got likely letters from Rice and Dartmouth. One of them was rama_GB I think.

rama_GB is an American citizen...

what are likely letters?

@tetrisfan: oh ok, didn't know that.

Adeoye- they are letters stating that the applicant was likely to be admitted.
Basically its a way which universities use to attract top candidates to come to their school. As a candidate who got a likely letter from Amherst but got admitted to both Amherst and williams probably would attend Amherst.

Rice and UVA send likely letters to internationals, as do the Ivies.

Yeah. I got a likely from Rice! Quite stoked about it. And I'm from India.

polydentate: Do all the ivies even give likely letters? And if so, do you know how many they've been sending out?

No idea how many they send out...but all of them do.

likely letters are actually cleverly disguised psychological tools used to induce a feeling of wantedness and self-appreciation for both himself and the school

a simple analogy would be the SAT1 critical reading passages...the recommended way to answer the questions is always to adopt a critical approach i.e. to find out whats wrong with a certain answer rather than whats right....because if you start finding whats right with an answer, you'll end up subconsciously trying to convince yourself that the answer is right, when it actually isnt

same thing for likely letters, because the moment u receive a somewhat favourable answer, you will certainly start to wonder whats it really gonna be like attending it, enjoying it etc. believe it or not, but you will start to subconsciously list the possible advantages of attending that particular school i.e. try to convince or re-assure yourself that you've really done great....so by the time the regular decisions come in, you've most likely been hooked =)

p.s. something similar happened to me, if not becoz of my mum's staunch refusal to fund my education at the slightly less selective college, i would have capitulated

^That's what has been happening to me after I got my Michigan acceptance.

^ exactly 10

EDIT : i meant that for longbowmen's post

any canadians got any letters from Ivies yet?

how long does it take for a letter to go from US to canada?

thx!
