I feel I should know this, but who gets a likely letter? Are they just recruited athletes, or others too? Do certain schools send these letters out more than others? What is the likelihood (pun intended!) that a student gets a likely letter, but doesn't get in? 0%, 5-10% 10+?

These letters started as a incentive to athletes, but are now used for ‘desireable’ students. I have heard of several rejections, even with a likely letter, but generally the acceptance rate is exceptionally good. Not sure which colleges are known to dole them out. Anybody want to add?

A likely letter is an early acceptance letter. You can lose the privilege of admission with a dramatic grade slump/cheating/felony/etc. but this applies to normal acceptance letters as well. In other words, the LL is just as good as the acceptance.
