I have heard a lot about Vanderbilt + Malaysians. My interviewer told me that someone in admissions had a close connection or something. I was looking at pics of some clubs I may be interested in and some were 50%+ Malaysian.
Why is this?
And is there Asian diversity other than Malyasians?

Crozet,

As I understand it, the Malaysian students are a group of (female) engineering students who are supported by the Malaysian government. They are expected to complete the engineering curriculum in three years. It is a special arrangement with the Malaysian government. I am impressed that these students are able to participate in clubs or any other activities while they are completing the engineering program in three years.

If you look up student organizations, you will come across links to some Asian student groups. It looks to me like most of the Asian students who are officers in those clubs have East Asian names, but not all.

I personally know three Asian American students from my son’s high school who attend Vanderbilt. Two are freshman, one is a junior. None are Malaysians. They all like it at Vanderbilt. Perhaps it is relevant that their high school is a highly diverse one (college community), and the Asian/Asian American students have never self-segregated or been segregated in their activities.

They sent me an email earlier this month:
Dear …,
Your application is complete and ready for review. We will mail our decision letter by April 1st. If you need further assistance please contact…
Is this a good sign??

it’s a great sign! it means that the admissions office has ALL of your paperwork

Thanks midmo!
That makes me feel better. I’m Asian American (parents are South Asian) and I am really looking for a campus that is not self-segregated between minorities.
