According to the e-mail I received from a student in the Recruitment department/whatever, about 120 people received likely letters.

(Mine was sent out just last week.)

Sounds like they're sending many more likely letters to non-althletes than before. In my year (2005) maybe 1-2 non-athletes posted on cc about receiving one. I don't believe the cc membership increased 8-fold, so there's a likely conclusion... It's a smart move on Yale's part, as recruiting of super-talented non-athletes should be just as much of priority as for athletes. Dartmouth sends them to 1/3 of acceptees.

haha. i for one think CC membership has increased 8-fold

Has anyone gotten a call from their regional director for anything besides a likely letter? I just got one a couple hours ago, but wasn't there to pick up the phone. I called back but no answer. I dont think the call was regarding missing materials either, since my Yale status page says that Yale has everything it needs to review my app.... I'm really nervous

copelandx, that sounds like good news, and from other threads, it seems like they're still calling/sending out likely letters

It was a likely call. Woooooo!!

copelandX, have you spoken to them yet? How exciting for you! Congratulations.

No likely letter then youre not in? this is crazy

hedoya--The word is that around 100 people got likely letters, so most people who are admitted will not receive them.

Hedoya you know that isn't true.

AdmissionsAddict, do you think that the number has gone up at all since when you heard that? It seems like they've been calling for almost a month... also it seems like an awful lot of people on CC has gotten one too haha. Whatever, I'm not complaining!!!

Yup, that's CC--makes you feel inadequate because you see "so many" people getting likely letters.

I recently talked to my regional director about missing stuff, and sneaked in a question about the likely letters--about 100 letters are sent (~50-60 non-athletes), but they've been trickling them out over the last half of February to early March. They're just about done with the last ones, supposedly.

Admissionsaddict,

Does Yale accept 2 or more students from one school or do they try to keep the number of accepted students down to 1 or 2 only/school?

AnxiousMom

Pharmagal, I'm not AdmissionsAddict but I'm pretty confident in my answer...? Yale doesn't have an admissions quota for high schools. The fact that most schools have 0, 1, or 2 Yale acceptances per year is simply a result of high selectivity. There are schools where more than 1 or 2 get in per year. I went to an "elite" private prep school with a senior class of about 200; last year 4 got into Yale from this school.

Agree with Mallomar. Number of admits depends on the strength of the applicants applying from your school and the strength of the school itself. More competitive high schools are apt to have more admits.

God...looks like a LOT of people got likely letters!
Congratulations all! (Those with the likely letters i mean)
Internationals don't get likely letters...do they?

The type of a non-recruited athlete would be a girl i knew, who got one from Harvard:

Decent GPA, good SATs, but years of MUN accomplishments, and 4th best debater **WORLDWIDE /B

And she is an international student

It really is true that only about 50 or so non athletes get likely letters. So, if Yale accepts less than 2,000 applicants and only 50 or so receive likely letters, we are talking about a very small percentage of those accepted getting them. However reading cc it appears as if so many are getting them. This is probably due to the fact that some of the most accomplshed applicants post on cc. Also, I do believe that there are a few posters - not many but a few, who may not have really received them, but claim they have. There are a few posters who claim to have received them from multiple schools that only send out a small number to non athletes. Since there is often no rhyme or reason why an applicant may be accepted to Harvard but not Yale, Yale but not Harvard, Harvard but not Columbia ect, it is unusual that some posters happen to receive likely letters to several top schools that send them to less than 5% of those they accept.

to add to what collegebound said, i was one of the students who received a likely letter from Yale. i applied to williams, amherst, brown, stanford, wesleyan, and pomona--yet i haven't received likely letters from any of those schools. in contrast, someone who also applied to those same schools might have gotten early-writes from williams, amherst, or stanford and not from yale. so if it's any consolation for anyone, nothing in the college admissions process really makes sense.
