heesun, I bet it was really nice to get that likely letter from Yale. Psychologically, do you think it will impact your decision? For instance, perhaps a student might be partly influenced to the school that sent the likely letter because he/she might feel more wanted by that school. I think the likely letter is a great admissions' tool and give Yale credit for sending them.

The likely letter definitely swayed my decision. I was a diehard MIT fan at first, but after getting such a welcoming invitation from Yale, how could I resist?

i completely agree with you, CMA. that likely letter makes all the difference. before it i hadn't truly considered yale because i thought there was no way i could get in but after the letter, my whole perspective on the school changed. i have so much loyalty for yale right now it's embarrassing, and it really has everything to do with the fact that they wanted me first. the other day i found myself passionately advocating yale over harvard in a conversation with one of my teachers (a harvard alum), and totally blasting harvard on things that i'd heard on a "yale>harvard" thread on CC (like New Haven v. Boston, i was actually trying to convince him that living in new haven was a more socially enriching experience compared to an insular cambridge...).

i thought at the beginning of the college admissions process i'd choose between either williams or stanford. But at this point few things would sway me toward those schools after the warm treatment i've been getting from yale. so yes, it is a wonderfully clever admissions strategy on their part.

does anyone know how positive a likely letter is? I mean, I was just so shocked and yeah, if I got the letter and didn't mess up my mid-year report... am I definitely in?

i can't speak for yale's admissions office, but i'd say that if it took the time to send you a letter like that then you'd have to flunk out of high school or commit a crime for you to get rejected. my admissions officer told me over the phone that no, it was not a joke, and that it was more or less a done deal as long as i kept up my performance in school.

I think it is definitely swaying my decision (although it's been wavering between top 1 and 2 for a while now). Not the letter itself, but the reception I've gotten...my interview has called me and wants to meet up again to talk about yale...my regional officer called me...the local yale club sent me a sweatshirt...makes me really feel like I've just joined this wonderful family.

YOU GOT A SWEATSHIRT?

pouts I am quite jealous. I was promised a t-shirt, but none came... and as for my interviewer, haha... my Harvard interviewer was much nicer, let's put it that way. This one scared me.

But, yeah, I'm feeling quite "swayed" too! It's so hard to choose...

I am also quite jealous, hmph. Oh well, it'll all come in due time... on the Yale admitted students website, there's a link for a free Class of 2011 t shirt, and you have to login to get it. Unfortunately, my account hasn't been activated (yet)...

Haha free t-shirt? Free sweater? How come I haven't heard of this? XD

Because your local Yale Club isn't as warm and fuzzy ;)

What do you mean by local Yale Club? I mean, I'm international... so... yeah

yeah i'd like a sweatshirt, too. but a free t-shirt also sounds nice. i can't wait until april 1st!!!!! :)))

^Me too! I'm growing happier as the days near to April 1...

I wonder if we could ask for a free hoodie or a cap. :)

Is it stupid of me to be nervous that they'll turn around and reject me come April 1 for no reason? lol, I think i'm just being paranoid..

does anyone know if Yale is still sending out likely letters, or not?

oh, and I'm asking because I recently got one from Cornell (2 days ago) and was wondering if that meant Ivy's were still sending them out. Maybe it was something particular to Cornell, i dunno!
