Likelyhood of getting into UF?

UF is pretty much my dream school, I would take it over an Ivy League any day. My father graduated from there and I would really like to continue the UF legacy; however, the question is... "What are my chances of getting in?"

I have a 3.79 HS GPA, a 4.4 HPA, and a 4.2 recalculated GPA. Unfortunately I feel I did poorly on my SAT, receiving a 1720 (although it is in the Summer session average acceptance range).

I am part of the Academic team at my school and team Captain as a Junior. A member of multiple honor societies (5) and I am currently in the top 5% o my class (28/774). Also I recently got accepted to the UF SSTP (Student Science and Technical Program) where I will stay there for 7 weeks and take classes and complete lab work, receiving 6 credit hours and 1 HS credit. I only worry because I know of one kid that attended it (class rank 76) and did not get accepted. I am also a member of the Marching and Concert Band and have numerous hours doin Missions work with my church in foriegn countries.

I am a junior and plan to apply this summer, I am taking one more SAT and an ACT before school ends. Seriously if I don't get into this school I will cry like a little girl. :P

Is there hope for me?

I forgot to mention that I take multiple AP classes per year and plan to have passed 11 by the end of my senior year.

bump. plz chance me :D

Also would you suggest that I apply for Summer session or Fall session, my school tells me that it is easier to get accepted into the summer session while the UF admissions page tells me that it is equally as tough to get into both sessions… So who is lying?

Bump.

Hi,

I am only a Junior as well who aspires to go to UF too. This will be my best educated guess based off your stats. GPA is sufficient, right about on par, your ECs are good, could use a little work. And I recommend working your @$$ off improving that SAT/ACT… I recommend the ACT but improve! But the big question is whether you’re instate or not, because believe it or not, it will make a large difference. Good thing you have a legacy to rely on.

If SAT/ACT improved to 1900/29 I say you get in. Especially if you’re instate. Your chances will shoot up if you’re a minority too.

Yes, I am a Florida high school student. And I do have other EC’s I just forgot to mention them, for example, I was on a robotics team where we built and programmed our robot from scratch, competing in multiple competitions and places 3rd in state. I also am an avid Mountain biker and compete against other youth and ride often just for the thrills and strenuous exercise (plus Gainesville has the best trails  ) I also failed to mention that my ethnicity is white.

In response to the previous post, yeah… I plan on working my *** off, bought a study book and am currently going through it.

Thanks for the comment, can I get a little more feedback?

Bump.

Chance me ill chance you :D

Bump.

Your GPA should be good for the school, but there’s not much we could do now to improve it.

I’ll be straight up with you, no BS - That SAT is NOT GOOD. You can definitely push it into UF, but I promise you, that SAT WILL BE YOUR ANCHOR and it may end up being the deciding factor between ADMISSION and REJECTION. When I say study for that, I mean it: 1-2 hours a day, every day would be nice. Anything less than 1 hour a day (or 5-6 on the weekends) wouldn’t make it. If it means you have to take a class, so be it; GET THAT SAT UP! On the other hand, your score could just be how you think, as different tests are structured for different minds. I’d recommend taking the ACT - I did no studying and came out with a 32, then a 34, while I got a 2090 on the SAT.

Being a member of honors societies is nice, but your status as Academic Team captain (assuming varsity) is a very nice leadership position to have. Definitely approve.

As for the college camp, that’s a truly wonderful idea. Colleges keep their eyes out for anyone who shows an interest in their uni by doing extra things like that. I have no doubt that the 76er who got rejected was due to something else - this camp can only help you. I’m not guaranteeing anything when I say this, but when it comes down to two candidates who have similar GPAs, essays, ECs, etc, small things like this and legacy status can be the difference between acceptance or wait list/rejection.

Also, just curious, what’s your status with Bright Futures and volunteering? I know it’s kinda preemptive to ask about this, but scholarships are muy importante.

I would have recommend ED/EA for UF, but unfortunately it seems they’ve removed this ability from their admissions.

Keep up your good grades, don’t screw up the GPA, take the hardest classes senior year (If it means 4 or 5 AP classes, go for it) you can do, study hard for the SAT/ACT, and keep up a positive attitude.

Hope I helped. If you have any questions, just throw me a line.

Would you mind chancing back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1494053-do-i-have-shot-princeton.html

I was rejected by UF last year with a 30 on my ACT but my GPA was a 3.0 which obviously led to my rejection. The thing about UF is even people with 4.0 or above and 30 or above on the ACT are getting rejected. It depends a lot on the pool of applicants that year. Keep putting in the hard work and you definitely have a chance!

As for being a legacy, it absolutely does not help you get in. My dad and Aunt went to UF. My dad also knew a guy that went to UF and worked there for over 20 years and his daughter was rejected…it’s tough.

Good luck!

Thanks guys for the feedback  I appreciate it. Yes as I stand now, unless I get any c’s in multiple classes (not likely lol) my GPA is solid. As for the SAT I have a study book coming in 2 days in the mail, which I plan to study a good bit until the test May 4th. I am taking the ACT June 8th.

For community service, I would say I am average with probably total of 130 hours. The only difference is that as I said earlier it is from missions work in third world countries (id est building houses, cleaning up communities, caring for sick and elderly people, and interacting with underpriveleged children).

Bump.

“As for the college camp, that’s a truly wonderful idea. Colleges keep their eyes out for anyone who shows an interest in their uni by doing extra things like that.”

I suppose you could call it a college camp. I will be spending seven weeks there this summer taking two classes for 2 dual-enrollment credits (Sophomore Gen. Course Wrk. Credit and Junior Gen. Lab Wrk Credit) and 1 HS credit. I will be working in campus labs about 40hrs a week with science professors.

While I’m there I plan to befriend a professor and work hard, hopefully getting a letter of recommendation from one of them.

Not to mention there’s a skate-park across the street from my dorm  so you know where I’ll be on the weekends.

bump.

Bumpity bump bump :)

Last year, my son raised his SAT score 110 points the second time he took the exam, with no studying.

So mere familiarity with the exam may help you.

That being said, seldom has a person’s work been so clearly cut out for you.

Raise your SAT to perhaps a 1900, and you will probably get in.

So I would take an organized prep course.

Not because you can’t study for the SAT on your own, but you probably won’t. If you take an organized prep course, it is like “forced studying”.

Also, I presume UF superscores. If so, you might only have to improve your scores in certain areas.

And yes, I would say that it is easier to get in over the summer, so definitely apply for summer admission.

Last year, our family paid a fancy college counselor, and that was one of her pieces of advice that she gave us.

However, all that being said, if you have to go to FSU, that wouldn’t be the end of the world.

Also, I would bet that you could probably take the SAT two more times. If so, do it.

You’re credentials overall are great, but your SAT score is a MAJOR dealbreaker. Don’t aim for the average, go high! (2000-ish) Also, taking the ACT might help as well.

Just got that study book today, and I’ve already eaten my way through the first section. i also do the SAT question of the day online.

Thanks guys for the feedback, I am quite excited to get into the school of my dreams, just need to get that SAT score up to have acceptance be a bonafide guarantee. :D

bump.

A 1720 is not horrible for UF- granted, it’s not the best (a 1740 gets you into the 50th percentile).

bump. bump. bump.
