Likely's

how many likely letters are sent out?

Dean J has always been elusive on this. If I had to guess I’d say between 500-1000, but I really have no clue. It just seems like they send them to almost all of the 34-36 (ACT) white kids and 30+ URMs [both with good GPAs/Class Rank & ECs to back them up of course]. Due to this wide spread, I would think that they’d have to send a good number of letters. It could be even higher than 1000.

There’s a reason…we have no target number. As we read, we flag students for the Likely Letters. There isn’t an expectation that we’ll hit a certain number each year.

Just as no single factor determines a decision, no single factor prompts a Likely Letter to go out.

Dean J - do you send likely letters out to students attending overseas International Schools? If so, were they mailed last Friday with the others? I am trying to figure out when it might arrive here ( not that I am counting on it) :)

That one is covered in the comments on the blog post, iluvhs. Scroll down on this page:

Dean J - Our son received his “likely” yesterday. Is there still a shot at the Echols, since at least some calls have already been made?

Have calls for Echols actually been made?
I was told they had not…

It’s Spring Break here. The students won’t be back until next week. They had two call nights last week.

Scholars notifications are still a few weeks away. Remember the blog post…an LL doesn’t equate an offer into a scholars program.

Dean J, do scholars notifications come with the admission decision, or earlier. I am applying to SEAS, so the applicable program would be the Rodman Scholars Program.

The scholars programs send notifications themselves. In the past, Echols has sent their letters by US Mail a little ahead our offer letters. Rodman tries to the same, but I believe they emailed last year when they realized they couldn’t get the mailing out in time.

That’s probably more info that you need, isn’t it? :)

Short answer: Echols, Rodman, and CSS have sent their invitations a few days before our offers in the past. There’s no rule that they must do the same this year. As always, I’ll post an entry on the blog when I know what their plans are.

Wow! So I’m in the car with my mom, talking about these “likely letters” and how I’m bummed I didn’t get one. I didn’t even know they existed until I read about it here. We pull up to the mail box and, well, there was the envelope!

I really hope this means I’m in because my parents have already started celebrating for me (lol) and planning a trip to VA!

Yikes. Just saw my typos in the last entry. Sorry, folks. It’s been a long day. :)

No problem. Thanks, Dean J, for all of your time! It’s been really helpful, actually - my parents were pretty skeptical that the letter was a “likely” letter. so it was very helpful to show them your posts.
