Limited Access?

Just wondering if anyone knew what it means when a department or major at UF is a "limited access" program?

Obviously it sounds like those programs are just harder to get into, and luckily my major is not limited access but I'm just wondering what exactly it means to be a limited access program.

It literally means that it is harder to get into because there’s only a limited amount of spots available for that major (usually due to a lack of resources).

I figured that’s what it means, but then again, doesn’t every major have a limited amount of spots available and limited resources?

Think limited in the extreme sense.

I’ve only heard the term “limited access” major used for transfer students. So CLAS would limit how many transfer can enter each of its major.

For regular studenst that only major I can think of that would limit its number include architecture, interdisciplinary studies (IDS), and I think journalism has something similar.

Bump

Is engineering a UF “limited access” program?

D would like to enter the college of engineering from HS with her AA from DSC (via DE).

Nope (not yet, but they did set some sort of record this fall with Freshmen engineering admits). As long as you have the grades (and pre-req’s as a FL transfer student), you can get in. The business school is a recent exception of the business school, which is only allowing transfer students access to the online program.

In most cases, all UF does is raise the requirements for entrance to a major (as a transfer). Freshmen currently, if accepted to the school, in general can pick any majors (exceptions could include, for example, the school of music which “may, I think” also require that the student go through an audition).

Thanks Gator88NE.

I’m still a bit fuzzy on the DE application process to UF.

Applicants with an AA, and less than 12 post HS college credits are to apply as freshmen (01 NOV deadline).

The college of engineering requires:

"To qualify for admission to the College of Engineering, transfer applicants must meet the following criteria. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission.

Completion of a minimum of 60 transferable credit hours.
Completion of UF’s foreign language requirement (2 sequential years of a foreign language in high school or a minimum of 8-10 college-level credits);
A minimum 2.0 cumulative (overall) GPA;
Completion of at least 6 of the 8 critical tracking courses at the time of application with a minimum 2.5 critical tracking GPA.No more than two attempts are allowed for tracking courses. Withdrawals count as an attempt…"

But in D’s case she isn’t applying as a transfer applicant, she is required to apply as a freshman (with an AA, etc.).

I’m not sure IF she is admitted to UF what her class standing would be.

I think “by FL law” she would enter as an upperclassman, but I don’t see a way to complete the 8 critical tracking classes before she graduates HS (and with the <12 post HS college credits to apply as a freshman).

I don’t want D to be locked out of the college of engineering because she earns 60 CC credits prior to UF admission, but doesn’t have the 8 “critical tracking classes” for upper division transfer to the college of engineering.

Also:

"Concurrent High School and AA Degrees

Students who will receive their high school diploma and the Associate of Arts degree at the same time should complete the freshman application. You must apply to a specific UF college and major, and you must meet college and major prerequisite course and minimum GPA requirements. "

I’m not sure what the, “major prerequisite course and minimum GPA requirements” would be in D’s case.

Call admissions on Monday (352-392-1365) , I’m thinking they may not require all 8 classes (or engineering), since it’s darn hard to do in high school through DE.

In the unlikely chance admissions can’t answer your question (or it seems a bit off), you can also try Engineering student affairs at (352) 392-0944 (though they may point you right back to admissions…got to love this stuff!).

At the end of the day, she’ll still be going through freshmen admissions…

Hi, I know i’m way late on this topic. But if I am an undergraduate student completing my AA, and I want to transfer to UF as a History (College of Liberal Arts) Major, am I guaranteed acceptance if I meet the requirements? I read somewhere only one Florida school has to accept me if I transfer with my AA but I only plan on applying at UF.

@jakefl718 Next time, start a new thread and avoid bumping an old one! :slight_smile:

You are not guaranteed acceptance to UF, if you have an AA degree, but only to one of the 12 public universities. History doesn’t seem to be one of the “competitive” or limited access program. As long as your GPA is high enough, you shouldn’t have a problem.

Good Luck!
