Lincoln at Gettysburg

Has anybody else randomly received this book from Cal in the mail? It didn't even come with an explanation letter or anything.

LOL
its for like a lecture during welcome week, where the author will speak about it and you guys can ask questions and discuss his book.

Hm, I havent received a copy... :(

lol I never know about these things beforehand

so they're sending these books to all the freshmen? that's a lot of money. how many people do they expect to go to the lecture? XD

lol im not sure, since I only skimmed over the site giving the info out awhile back (sorry, dont have the link).
And I agree, that is a lottt of money if they're expecting to send out a copy to every freshmen, except me. haha

haha last year they gave "A Briefer History of Time" by Stephen Hawking to all the freshmen

correction: last year they gave it to all L&S students...pity they didn't give them to us lowly engineers...the ones who are probably more interested in hawking

hmm didnt know that.. but yea.. pity, considering most of the people on my floor didn't even bother to open it

if I had gotten that hawking book, I would have at least cracked it open and read the first several chapters... but something civil war related? I could just never get into civil war. I don't know why. I didn't get into it in elementary school or middle school or high school. And I probably still can't now.

i haven't gotten the book yet, here's an explanation letter (an email i got on june 25th)

Dear New Students,

Congratulations on your admission to Cal, and Welcome to the College of
Letters and Science!

I am writing today to give you advance notice of a new initiative
called On the Same Page. This program gives our new students something
in common to talk about, both with other students and with the faculty.
In late July we will be mailing you a copy of this year s featured book,
Lincoln at Gettysburg, by Garry Wills. This Pulitzer Prize-winning
examination of the historical, political, philosophical, social, and
literary context of Lincoln's historic address was especially chosen
for our entering students by the Deans of the College.

When you arrive on campus during Welcome Week you will have the
opportunity to attend one-time discussions of the book, led by
prominent members of the faculty of the College of Letters & Science.
There will also be special events related to the book: for instance, we
have a concert planned already and are working on the possibility of
screening related films.

Then in late September, Garry Wills himself will be visiting campus.
There will be many opportunities for students to meet and talk with him.
And he will be giving a public presentation in Zellerbach Hall on
September 26.

You will be receiving more details along with your copy of the book,
but you can also stay current on the many ways to participate in this
program in the fall by checking our website:
http://onthesamepage.Berkeley.edu.

Please be sure to set aside a few evenings during early August to read
Lincoln at Gettysburg, so that you will be prepared for the many events
and conversations that will make up this fall s On the Same Page .
Program.

Sincerely yours,

Mark A. Richards
Executive Dean of the College of Letters & Science

sending all the freshmen in l&s a book is a nice gesture, since it's probably costing them mucho $ and all, but having a concert and screening films in honor of the book seems a little...weird.

I think this thread is soOoOoOo cute.

so I finally opened the book, and there was a letter on the first page before the title page basically saying the same thing as the one that d=] posted XD

i got the hawkings book ... ahaha, im sad to say that.... i have "misplaced" it, thus, i have not gotten around to read it ~_*
