Lindner Business Honors?

My husband does the accepted student days with the kids so I did not attend the day. My son is a direct admit to Fisher. Also, he was accepted to the Scholars program (not honors). It sounds like scholars are living/learning specialized communities that you have to apply for. He said they did a good job there and it is a good program. With that said, my son did not come back with a different idea about Cincinnati. He is still interested with the different opportunities Cincinnati offers and is still excited about getting any information back on scholarship potential, program, etc. I don’t believe it swayed him one way or another, really. Next visits are Penn State, Miami and Indiana, in that order.

We do the direct admit day for Kelley this weekend. We are anxious to learn more. My son is sold on the university, and is interested in UC if he makes a certain honors program. I think he has narrowed it down to those two programs.
He was not motivated to do the OSU Fisher day so thanks for the information.

@CWAE182025 We were unable to attend the Direct Admit Day for IU due to swimming sectional, district and state meets the next three weekends. I understand they do a great job and it can “seal the deal” for many. My son is a direct admit but no honors (I believe). We are scheduled in March for our tour of the business school. I would like to know your thoughts afterwards. Keep me posted!

@CWAE182025 and @BreakfastClub1 We just got back from the parent program. They said the group there tonight was interviewing for all 3 programs. You were right (based on what they said tonight) about certain dates being for interviews for all 3 and certain dates being for CoE specifically. If I understood correctly, they said they had brought in around 155 kids to interview for all 3 programs and another 100 to interview specifically for CoE. There are 25 spots for LHP, 40 for Kolozdik, and 72 for CoE. The pamphlet they handed out said 60 CoE, but the speaker said 72 was the correct number. S is still there interviewing, so haven’t yet heard what information he picked up or what his impressions were.

The great mystery is solved!

@gclsports Just curious on your son’s experience and any additional thoughts/insights

@breakfastclub1 My son said he was told the same info about numbers for the three programs as I had in the previous post; he didn’t get anything new. He had a favorable impression of the three interviewers and the honors students he met while there. He also liked the idea of the coop, which is apparently built into the LHP but could be arranged under the other two programs. He thinks UC would move up on his list if he were lucky enough to get LHP. Given the numbers, though, I’m not sure how likely that really is. If he gets Kolozdik, I think he would consider that. I don’t think CoE, would be enough to draw him in, if he were to get that, but I could have read him wrong. And if he does not get honors at all at UC, he would choose another option where he has money and honors.

@gclsports I am in agreement with the offering of COE. I don’t know if that would be enough with COE and only a Cincinnatus scholarship, particularly since I have read that those scholarship amounts tend not to be very big. My son has received good merit money from other places and higher ranked business schools. Based on all the information we have gathered, it looks like there are about 255 kids for 137 spots (100 of those kids for COE only). Of course, Cincinnati will have to extend more invites than spots in order to get the yield they want. We will all continue the process!

Hi! I hope you don’t mind if I join your conversation. My D is admitted to some of the business schools you are discussing. Kelley, Fisher, Farmer, Dayton, PSU and a few not mentioned. We are not able to make Kelley’s DA days because my D is in the Dominican Republic with her HS Sat. to Sat. so we missed both weekends. We are headed to OSU next Sat 17th and IU on the 19th. She is shadowing a Kelley business student on the 19th. We will tour Miami and Dayton in March. Since we haven’t toured many places yet I am interested in your impressions.

I am unclear about OSU DA program vs. the pre-business. I was reading a post which mentioned you need to complete coursework and have a minimum GPA in order to be admitted to Fisher. That appears to be for the Pre-major. Are there specific requirements for the DA students too? It doesn’t appear so in the information I copied below from OSU website, however we haven’t toured yet so I am unclear.

Direct Admission Criteria for Autumn 2018:

Only incoming freshman who matriculate at The Ohio State University-Columbus campus in the autumn semester are eligible for direct admission. Students will automatically be offered direct admission if they have:

Composite ACT score of 30 or SAT total score of 1390 or higher (critical reading and math only) is required.

-OR-

Composite ACT score of 26 or SAT total score of 1240 (critical reading and math only) or higher, AND rank in the top 20% of high school class.

Fisher’s Pre-Major Program:

Students who do not qualify for direct admission will be considered for Fisher’s Pre-Major Program. Pre-major students are members of the Fisher community and will work with an assigned business academic counselor to begin their required foundation courses.

After satisfactory completion of business coursework and required minimum GPA, eligible pre-major students will apply to the major program and desired specialization through a competitive application process.

I do know SMEAL requires a minimum 3.2 all business areas except for Finance which requires a 3.5 after completing required coursework, so no-one is officially admitted to SMEAL until those requirements are met.

I’m also interested in any impressions of Farmer, Dayton and Kelley. j

It sounds like we are all going to be very busy touring this spring!

I think it’s very interesting how basically all the Lindner Honors students on this page are considering the same universities/business programs. Lots of cross admits. However Lindner it looks like Lindner is the school doing the most to ‘woo’ it’s too applicants and offering three separate programs - unless other similar days have been organized at Farmer, Fisher, etc?
I was also under the impression that Cincinnatus could go up to full tuition (although obviously not the most common award)?

@CWAE182025 How did the IU Kelley DA Day/weekend go? We have never visited but will in March. Interested in any feedback.

@MYOS1634 I find it interesting that we all have a core group of schools, too. Most of my sons schools offer a ‘typical’ accepted student day where you breakout to your specific college (besides IU’s Kelley’s DA day). I did read that Cincinnatus could go up to full tuition but, unfortunately, I have also read that many past recipients have not received as much as they thought they would. Some say that smaller amounts are spread over many. I’ll be interested to see how this plays out with everyone.

@thinkofalogin Welcome! I understand it is better to be a DA to OSU than not, just easier. My husband went to the accepted student day and believed that there were no additional requirements if you were a DA. If you were a pre-business, you needed the gpa plus apply. You are correct about Penn State. My son was accepted at main campus for finance. He is going 2/26 to visit PSU and will hear about the requirements/program. I don’t know if he is going to want that pressure. We will see. My husband is a Miami alumni and I am a Dayton (accounting) alumni. You cannot go wrong with Miami and they do give decent merit if you have the stats. Both schools are known for a party atmosphere but, you know your child and whether they can handle that. Anyone who goes to Dayton loves it. For Dayton, you need to get good merit money and/or financial aid or I don’t know if I could justify the cost with all the other less costly options out there. We are going on 3/19 for the IU visit. Overall, I think my S will prefer having the DA route for business schools. I don’t think honors is a requirement for him meaning he will not disregard a school because he did not get into their honors program. Keep us posted on your visits.

@BreakfastClub1 We returned last night from Kelley Direct Admit Day. It was well planned and impressive. Friday night was an opportunity to talk to a representative from each specific major in the business school, as well as students representing student government, business frats, and service. In addition, there were students floating in the convention center to answer any questions. All the students were extremely well spoken and helpful. I found out Saturday that Kelley really focuses on soft skill development (especially first year) such as public speaking and interpreting their stories into an interview and resume. On Saturday, there were many student presentations describing their experience at Kelley… positive and setbacks such as failing class assignments or not being selected for clubs / workshops and how they developed resilience.
Many of the students discussed their student mentors as being critical to their success. I had read in other threads that this is an opportunity for the ACE students. My son was not asked into ACE, so I asked a student about this. He told me there are other avenues to find mentors, but the student will have to be proactive. I have a feeling many of he students who were speaking were ACE students or made it into Honors their sophomore year.
With that said, their job placement rate is 98 percent, much better than OSU. UC has this type of placement rate for honors students but reflects more of OSU stats for their non honors graduates.
What I liked: freshman year go through Compass, which is a course to find you passion; personality tests, hopes and dreams, ambitions, and talents all taken into consideration. They also get assigned an academic advisor and career coach from the outset.
I also liked the study abroad opportunities, you can spend semesters in many countries as a reciprocal agreement with same tuition rate. Also, these study abroad opportunities allow for students to meet with business or government officials in these countries.
Kelley seems to focus heavily on experiential learning and discovered there are 30 professor marriage couples who get very involved in students lives, even having them over to their home for dinner, etc.

Whew! A lot in a few hours.

I guess my main questions would be starting salary for non honors vs honors students.
And, how easy it is to get student mentors your freshman year.
I just want to make sure all those opportunities will be available to my non honors son.

@BreakfastClub1

I don’t know too much about Dayton’s reputation for Business. The students (including my Engineering major nephew) love their school, but I just cant see paying more to go to Dayton than to go to Miami.

This is the great neglected decision factor IMHO. I cannot imagine matriculating at a college as pre-whatever, when one had a choice to matriculate elsewhere as a directly-admitted whatever.

@CWAE182025

I read elsewhere on CC that OSU has mediocre placement rates for their Business grads. One would naturally expect UC’s placement rate to be lower because of the lower median stats of its student body, but it’s pretty damning that a relatively high-stat school such as OSU is significantly lagging not just Kelley, but also Farmer.

However, Kelley has this required math class called Finite Math that is supposed to be an absolute killer.

@BasicOhioParent
We are concerned about Finite Math also; one of the students said it is not as much pressure if you are a direct admit; however, it does weed out a high percentage of potential standard admits. I have heard you can take it at a junior college and transfer it in:)

Thank you! I appreciate all of the comments on this thread. My D had a more favorable impression of OSU than Miami on our general tour last year, which was unexpected. Since she has been accepted by Fisher and Farmer now we are going back to tour each of their business schools. I’m wondering if her first impression will change. It sounds like a fantastic business school. Im wondering their job placement percentage compared to Kelley and OSU. We are scheduled to see Fisher next Sat and Kelley next Monday because she missed both DA Kelley Werkends due to International travel with her HS. We her touring Farmer in March. My D was awarded 3 huge scholarships from Dayton. We personally know 4 extremely successful business graduates, however not much is mentioned on this site regarding Dayton’s reputation/ job placement etc. The scholarship is enticing, but I’m not sure my D is interested because she thinks she may prefer larger schools and other DA options. That being said we both had a very warm and positive experience at Dayton.

@Thinkofalogin: did your daughter get into Lindner/Lindner Honors, too? Or is she not considering it?

We were not familiar with Linder. It sounds like we may have missed a great opportunity from what I have heard on this thread. We are from Pittsburgh and many kids from our school district attend Dayton, Miami, OSU, PSU, Pitt and Kelley.

@Thinkofalogin What did your daughter prefer about OSU over Miami? My son and I haven’t visited OSU yet.

@Thinkofalogin U of Dayton is a very different type of school than the others you are looking at. It does not surprise me that you say you had a warm and positive experience there. I am a UD grad and know plenty that are successful and in all different fields. It was always known more for engineering but everyone I knew was from all other majors (education, business, etc.). Since it is a Catholic school, there are many service opportunities and special events/traditions like Christmas on Campus. Although I was from a public school, I found that many kids attended from other private/catholic schools from the Midwest. It is a “community” and always is welcoming. Also, a high stat student will get good academic money from UD. Most who look at UD will look at Xavier or (like many of my friends from Chicago) Marquette. The daily atmosphere is different than a Miami or OSU, not bad, just different.

I always resort back to “what you do with your school” mentality. After students leave high school, their “resumes” are wiped clean. They need to start over and find new things to get involved, jobs during their college time, etc. If they do nothing but attend classes, there will not be great job opportunities after college. Currently, they are compared to each other to get into colleges; after college, they will be compared to each other for great jobs. All schools have the opportunities for the students, it is the students job to seek out those opportunities.

BasicOhio Parent, We did a general tour at Dayton in the morning and Miami in the afternoon. OSU general tour was the following Day. She thought that Dayton was extremely warm and welcoming and she just didn’t have that feeling at Miami in the afternoon. She thought it seemed a little pretentious which is odd because of where we live. I recall her saying, “I don’t think I can wear my sweats to class in the morning here.” LOL. We both thought Miami was one of the most beautiful campuses we visited. She liked OSU because it was diverse, she liked the city, they did a good job of showing how they make a big school small, she loves big school athletics and school spirit and they have a very high first year retention rate. She was offered DA/ honors at Farmer and DA at OSU. Her impressions may change after we tour the business schools. I’ll let you know our impressions after the tour.
