I am wondering just how hard it is going to be to get linens to fit the bed in the dorm at UF. Just got a large envelope from UF that strongly suggests we order our bedding from them due to difficulty finding linens to fit their bed sizes. I am trying to determine if this is a marketing scam. Can anyone shed light on this for me? Thanks

its not a scam. UF and alot of schools beds are extra long twins. There are only specific sheets that will fit. I orderded my set from the packet UF sent me.

its a scam. dorm beds are a little longer than a twin, so regular twin sheets do not fit very well and tend to flip off the corners. however, bath bed and beyond carries dorm sheets, and lots of other dorm bedding too. they usually come in to the brick-and-mortar stores
around the end of july, when all the back to school stuff comes in. you can probably get them online anytime of year

its not a scam…bed bath and beyond is extremely expensive and the brochure that most incoming UF students got is extremely price reasonable + they have many colors and packages if you order early.

below is the link to bath, bed and beyond for the extra long twin. pottery barn also puts out a dorm catalog closer to end of summer with lots of options too.

[Bed Bath & Beyond - College Dorm Fitted Sheet Set, 100% Cotton, 250 Thread Count](http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=115209)

your getting absolutely ripped off going to bed bath and beyon…and pottery barn. you have to be a complete idiot to buy dorm materials at those places. do the price math…you’ll see a difference.

AnyaAres, I do not want to challange your opinion, but $9.99 is not a total rip off for a set of 250 thread count sheets.

10 dollar for sheets, i feel like you guys dont know what your talking about

I think $10 per sheet is not that expensive.

If you dont buy the bed sheet from bed bath and beyond? We did receive a packet from one company that you can order all linens from the list. I sometime dont like to order things from company like that, you dont know what you order, and the quality of the product is not good at all.

wolfpackmom- i’m not trying to be mean but i went on bb&b website. there are no sheets that are under 30$. just pillowcases that are 10$. just trying to make that clear.

Target has lots of xlong twin sets avail - probably starting in July. Bed Bath and Beyond has good sales and everyone gets those 20% off coupons from them. We got the same envelope and I was thinking about everyone having the same sheets, towels, etc.
What fun at laundry time. Every college has the same xlong twin beds. When our daughter moved in the dorms we bought a whole set - comforter, sheets, mattress pad from a friend whose daughter was moving out of the dorms at another school. The sheet sets offered in the UF offer aren’t a bad deal until you add on the shipping. The free shipping only applies to the pkg deals.

JCP has 300TC sheet set for $25. I personally need the high TC. I feel like I am sleeping on sandpaper on the lower counts.

BBB, PB, Target, and KMart are just a few of the college/dorm catalogs that will be coming to your mailbox soon. They all have extra long sheet, in a variety of thread counts and a variety of prices. If you have low maintenance kids who do not care about sheets, go for whatever is the cheapest and the most convenient. But if your kid is used to a certain quality of sheets, I would consider getting what they are accoustomed to. Sleeping in a strange bed is bad enough without topping it off with sheets that are too rough.

Thanks to those who took the time to reply to my post and provide those helpful links. Being the type of person who likes to “touch” the sheets/comforter to determine their softness and such… I think I might just pass on this package offer from UF and wait to see what the other stores have in stock when “back to school” campaign begin.

wyngator…I’m with you. I’m pretty picky about how my sheets “feel”.

BE VERY CAREFUL. The companies who sell dorm room sheets/towel packages sell VERY CHEAP STUFF. You can search here on the UF or FSU or UCF boards. Last year there were comments, some so bad that people bought new stuff after they paid for the dorm sheet packages. Those mail order companies make alot of money off of unsuspecting students/families. And UF endorses them as they get a cut.

By late May/early June, WALMART, TARGET, and other discount big box stores, even BJ’s and Sams have LOTS of twin XL sheets, comforters and any needed dorm/room supplies. They can be seen/felt and looked at closely. Just be cautious at ordering the stuff by mail.

The couple kids we knew who ordered the sheets from that company in the mailing were disappointed. Cheap seemed to be the consensus.

BB&B, Penny’s, Target, Walmart, even Macy’s has great sales - just watch for the XL twin. The piece we forgot about was the padded mattress pad underneath - which we forgot to buy -and ended up buying a twin and a “extra” piece - maybe it was a pillow pad - to make up the end. My son then swore the bed was more comfortable than the one at home!

We also forgot to buy a computer lock. I think my son used it over the summer but not sure how much he used it after that as most times he had his laptop with him.

The other thing he found very useful was a very large Gator rug for his dorm room we ordered from Lowe’s. Or just buy a very large rug for the space.

We did find that shopping in Gainesville during move-in was a hassle so we made sure we had most everything we needed as the Best Buy, etc. there were cleaned out for the items students wanted/needed.

Granted, I am pretty picky about my bedding. And I do not even what to think about what has happened on top of some of these dorm mattresses. So, here is what I recommend…

First bring some antimicrobial spray (fabreeze, lysol, etc) and mist both sides of the mattress. Then cover the mattress with a “cheapo” XL mattress pad. On top of that put an XL mattress egg create, or even better a XLfeather bed like this one:

[Bed Bath & Beyond - Sleep Basics® Fiberbed, 100% Cotton Cover, 220 Thread Count](http://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/product.asp?order_num=-1&SKU=114361&RN=560)

Then cover all that with a XL “padded” mattress pad (this keeps everything in place). Then put on your sheets, which you have WASHED AT HOME before bringing to college.

I know this sounds like alot, but it really makes for a comfortable bed with lots of “insulation” between you and the dorm mattress.

You guys are getting a little bit too worked up on this bedding stuff. Last year when I was getting ready to begin my freshman year we went through the same thing looking for these “mysterious” XL twin sheets. My dorm was supposed to have XL mattresses, when i got to school the dorm mattress was just a regular size mattress–not an XL. The XL size sheets we bought at Target or Wal-Mart worked fine, even though they were a little large. Guess it was better to have too big than too small. There are no bed inspectors at college like in the military!

P.S. While shopping at my local Wal-Mart this morning, I saw a display of clearance FSU bed sets in a bag. The set had a comforter and sheet set and they were priced at $10 (regular price $59) for the whole shooting match! Value hunter that I am, I was almost tempted to buy the bed sets even though I don’t go to FSU! I didn’t.
