Okay, so I signed up for classes during Phase II - one headache Panadoled. And now I'm on the waitlist (27 for Lecture, 1 for Lab) for a CS 61A class? Chances? :p

Main question however: I also signed up for Linguistics 55 with L. Hinton, along with French R1A with V. Rodic. I'm over-loading; I'm not sure which class to choose between, and I hope the first two weeks will help me decide. Is this a good idea?

However, I must confess that I have reasons why I would like to keep the other. For one thing, I like languages and their interactions, and would like to see the American perspective on the subject (I'm an international student). For another, I like French and the French culture, but most importantly, I really want to learn how to write in a way that a US college requires (again, I'm an international student, and I'm sure the Indian way of training students for writing is completely different from the American way), and that is why I would like to fulfill the R&C requirement first. However, the subject matter of the course (Arts and artists) doesn't appeal to me that much. On the other hand, I'm not sure how tough the course matter for Linguistics 55 will be anyway.

Could anyone who has taken either of the courses give me their insight please? I would really appreciate it. Am I missing any other good R&C and/or AC class? :) Thanks you!

Would appreciate it if anyone could look through it and give me their frank opinion. If you'll notice, I've fitted both Linguistics 55AC and French R1A into the timetable for the time being (TeleBears allowed me to sign up for 22 units - 4 of which are the waitlisted CS 61A class). If anyone could give me an idea about each of the classes I have a dilemma about so that I can choose, or if anyone could tell me whether the above schedule would be a good idea for the first few weeks to help me decide, I would be thankful...

Ling 55 would give you background on language in America and I think also study of English from a linguistics points of view. The French course may or may not have much about French and French culture. The description and sitting in the class can tell you a lot about that, as can asking the prof/gsi/teacher.
However, the subject matter of the course (Arts and artists) doesn't appeal to me that much. On the other hand, I'm not sure how tough the course matter for Linguistics 55 will be anyway. Taking the R and C might be a good idea for the reason you list, but I would advise you take an R and C class with a theme that actual interests you. What interests you? Film? Art? History? Literature? Stuff like literature, but from a rhetorical or philosophical way? Certain cultures? I think linguistics even has a course which you can take in addition to another course which satisfies half of the R and C requirement. If you really like music, there is a popular AC class about that.

Well, I really wanted to take up Rhetoric R1A, but all classes - even the waitlists - were full when I got to them, hence this urgent question. And I wanted to finish off the R&C requirement early on since I would like to know what kind of writing skills a college student in America would need; the course would do me well for any papers I might have to write later on (I'm incredibly verbose.) The French R1A class I'm taking is under V. Rodic (or M. Sanyal according to the Schedule), and it deals with how an artist is portrayed in literary media.

Or do you think I should postpone my R&C course till the Spring? And take a general Humanities course than worrying about taking the AC course? I was thinking of taking a Linguistics humanities and an Economics humanities course, but neither fits my schedule.

Bottom line: every course I do like either cannot fit, or will not fit, into my schedule. Btw, how is it?

Sadness! :(

If you were to end up taking all of the classes, I would say it's medium hard to hard, and unless you're pretty good with two of cs, chem, or calc, I would advise against taking all fice courses. With four, the three tech/sci and the one other, I think it's medium hard (some might say medium) and doable. I think your situation and plans should impact your decision. What's your college and do you plan on switching? What major do you plan on pursuing?

If you want to, but if you want to take one already, then why shouldn't you? I would advise taking an R and C course you find interesting, so I would say that you should put it off. Perhaps you will actually find this one interesting, so sitting in it might benefit you.

Both economics and linguistics are considered social sciences. :)

There are so many courses- I'm sure you can find a few that fit!

I'm EUD, but planning to major in either BioE, ChemE, IEOR or EECS... undecided as to which one to choose: I'm weird that way, and will probably end up doing a major-minor or a double major, even though it might not be productive or even necessary. But that's just me.

So I dropped Linguistics 55AC, yeah, and thought you had some good points, DRab. Thought it best to get the R&C requirement over with quickly (especially since learning how to compose will help me in later humanities classes - correct me if I'm wrong), and I love the French language, so I might love the French literature. Truth be told, I'm not a literature kinda guy, but the class might make me love it.

Teacher: So do you see how emotional the artist might have been when he flicked his paintbrush like so?
Me: He coulda just used Photoshop!
Lecture hall: looks at me
Me: small voice Yes, ma'am. :p

And also, I need to brush up on my reading. Viewpoint on classes, anyone? :p
