^ I’ve barely seen any mandarin speakers in the east bay/sf. Most I’ve met are cantonese.

Well, Cantonese if I go to the big B and Mandarin if I head south to LA! Thanks for the tip :)

ya, cuz most ppl living in east bay/sf are from Canton…
there are more Taiwanese, and some other Chinese-speaker, living in SoCal…

I think this is relevant. Great interview, I’m about halfway through it and so far it offers great perspective on employment options Enjoy!

lala…
Cantonese is wayyyyyyyyy harder than Mandarin tho!!

What would you say distinguishes the language as more difficult?

for mandarin, there are basically just four tones, as long as you master the four tones, you should be fine…
as for Cantonese, there are many many more tones, i dunno whats the official number for it, but maybe around 3x or more?

oic, I think I should start now…I wonder if it’s offered on Live Mocha.

whats a Live Mocha??

ah ha! thanks, great to know…

by the way, i have never researched on this but does anyone knows which UC has a better linguistics program?

I have heard that Cantonese may not be the best choice to learn, because it’s not being used as much as Mandarin. Any thoughts?

Here’s some perspective from 2007, Conniek.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/other-college-majors/440851-best-linguistics-schools.html

yeah, mandarin is more like an official language…
you would be able to use Cantonese in California pretty often…
but then, most ppl start with Mandarin when they first learn Chinese…

wow thanks for the info lala, i never expected berkeley to have its linguistics program ranked that high…

In another post, someone mentioned that Santa Cruz has one of the best language programs as well.

ya i saw that too…but i dint apply to Santa Cruz
at first i thought there arent really any good Linguistics programs in California, so I simply chose whichever school that i want to go

Well, the majority of what you get out of an education is based on what you put into it. All of the UC’s are going to offer good classes and you can utilize the internet and lecture podcasts within your field of study to learn more!

but holding a degree from a school with better linguistic program may make me look better if i wanna explore more in the field later after graduate…in my opinion…

lala did you apply to all the UCs with English major?? or some with Linguistics?
