I'm going to be a high school senior, and I've decided to major in linguistics because I love foreign languages and language acquisition has always amazed me. However, I'm not sure 1.) where to attend school for quality education, and 2.) what aspect of linguistics I should focus on.

I've been doing some research and found that UPenn and Ohio State (both relatively close to where I am) have good linguistics programs. I've also heard a lot about McGill in Canada and have been considering to apply there too. Is there anyone who can give me feedback on this or suggest any other schools?

Also, if the school is supportive of LGBT rights that would be a huge bonus as well!

UMass Amherst is one of the top 15 schools for linguistics in the world (according to US News). It is about an 8 hour drive from Pittsburgh (tried to pick a place between State College and Columbus).

And since you are looking for LGBT support, here’s this link for UMass.

[UMass Amherst: The Stonewall Center - Home](The Stonewall Center | UMass Amherst)

UMD-College Park also has a highly regarded linguistics program. I will enthusiastically endorse UMass also, where I was once a Linguistics major, and my son and niece are both Linguistics undergrads. I have another niece studying Linguistics at McGill and her experience has been very positive thus far.

Hey I’m also crazy about linguistics… Im applying to these schools (all near me in RI):
UPenn CAS
Yale
Brown
NYU
Brandeis
BU
UMass-Amherst (14th in nation)
UConn (honors program)

Look at some of the top LACs offering very strong linguistics and language programs with an accepting and supportive environment: Vassar, Middlebury, Wesleyan, Carleton come to mind.

Swarthmore is the best bet for your criteria. It actually has a linguistics major – you don’t need to create your own major as you would need to at Vassar, for instance.
