Linguistics at CMU?

I was accepted to the linguistics major in H&SS, but after doing some research in old threads in this forum it looks like the H&SS often gets the shaft at CMU when it comes to a lot of things. I also know the linguistics department is relatively new and isn't very big.

I was just wondering primarily if the academics are decent in H&SS/if I will be somewhat looked down on if I go to CMU and I'm in H&SS. And then specifically if the linguistics department is good too. Thanks!

^I’m also going to be a linguistics major if I go to CMU, and am interested to hear how the humanities are at CMU (primarily a sciencey school).

Also, I have a quick question, OP. On your “Where am I in the process?” page, is there anything listed under the “Program” section? For mine it just says “HSS” and “PHI” (Linguistics is in the Philosophy department), but nothing about Linguistics. Just wanna make sure I’m in the same boat as you. ;)

Yay for linguistics! (I think I saw you in the other thread too haha)

OMG YES it only says HSS and PHI, I’m so glad someone else has that too! I was starting to get worried they didn’t know I wanted linguistics specifically haha, since it’s really an interdepartmental thing but I could only choose one. Odd how it’s officially in philosophy… maybe CMU was trying to emulate MIT, who also does that? :)

Phew! Yeah a very pessimistic side of me was starting to wonder if maybe I wasn’t completely accepted…hehehe.

That’s what interests me about linguistics at CMU, though. It’s soooooo interdepartmental, which I like. But who knows, I’m not completely decided on my college yet. Still gonna wait for April 1st. :)

I’m a senior here, no one really looks down on H&SS students (none that I know) so I wouldn’t worry about that. If anything people poke fun at CS students for not showering or the oh-so-cool Drama students for singing down hallways.

That’s good to hear, I just remember seeing something about CIT/SCS being more respected or whatever somewhere, but it was probably just a myth.

Does anyone else know anything specifically about the linguistics department?
