I'm somewhat of a linguistics nut. I understand that Columbia has no formal linguistics department, but I've been doing some research, and I've found it is still possible to major in it if you petition hard enough.

Anyways, for me in particular, I'm more interested in the computational linguistics approach to the field, so the lack of a department isn't a dealbreaker. Going to major in CS first, Linguistics second if I get in. I know Columbia has several labs in their CS department dedicated to language processing by machines and what not. Does anyone know anything about them?

Also, would it be harder for me to get into Columbia College than SCEAS for Computer Science? I know the SEAS acceptance rate is quite a bit higher. Is it not possible to apply to SCEAS for CS and CC for Linguistics?

Columbia has a superb computational linguistics program with top faculty and research scientists. Undergraduates majoring in Linguistics in Columbia College can get involved with research and take classes etc as long as they have a computer science background.

Three faculty members were recently inducted as Fellows in the Association for Computational Linguistics.

Okay, then, that is absolutely wonderful. I was a bit off put by the relatively low rankings for both fields at Columbia, but combining them is awesome I see.

Columbia’s linguistics department is iffy, but its computational linguistics department (which I believe is part of the engineering school’s computer science department) is very, very good.
