Linguistics, LACs, and merit aid

I'm looking for a small university or LAC offering a linguistics program--particularly one where I can get some sort of merit aid. U of Chicago looks promising, but is it worth living at as social life and city are concerned?

I'm kind of screwed over as paying for college goes, so merit aid is important*.

Anyway, the linguistics isn't overly important, but the aid is. I've seen other threads here about schools offering merit aid, and they've been very useful. I've been going through these lists, looking for linguistics... but I thought someone might know of somwhere I don't.

I grew up poor with my grandparents for reasons I won't get into, then recently moved in with my parents (my mother and recently adopted father) because living with my grandparents was taking a toll on my mental health (seriously). My parents are pretty well-off, which eliminates any chance of need aid in most cases. The problem is they haven't been able to save for college for 17 years because they just got together.

Have your parents/mother actually filled out on of the online FAFSA calculators to see what you could potentially qualify for in terms of financial aid? I'd do that in addition to relying on merit aid. How much, realistically, are your parents going to contribute? If you don't know, ask them for a specific dollar amount NOW to avoid potential disappointment later.

As you no doubt already realize, merit money is going to be closely tied to your stats --- can you give us some idea of that so we can make some suggestions where you might qualify for substantial merit money? It's hard to make suggestions without that information but two schools you might check out are Brandeis and Tulane. If you don't want to post your stats publicly, PM me with them privately and I'll see if I can come up with some other suggestions for you.
