Linguistics major recommendations...?

What schools are known for being a good place to get a degree in Linguistics. And can hold out in other countries?

Among public schools, you’re in luck, in that Cal, UCLA, and UCSD have excellent linguistics programs.

As for privates, of course you’ve MIT, Yale, Stanford, Penn, etc.

Either way, if you’re a CCC student, and I assume you are, you cannot go wrong with Cal or LA. Both are top-10 material, nationwide.

Hrmmmm… competitively though, I don’t think I’m cut out for LA and Cal. SD, maybe, I also want to minor in Korean or continue learning my language as I am aiming to become a teacher in a foreign country.

I second Cal and LA… UCSD is excellent too. If you don’t think you’re cut out (you never know), try for CSULB. They’ve got a linguistics program and I know many professors who got their degrees (undergrad, postgrad) from there.

UCLA is amazing for linguistics, they’re number 2 in the country ONLY behind MIT (which is only because MIT had noam chomsky imo) they’re professors are amazing and a large majority of the professors there hold degrees from MIT. The undergraduate introductory linguistics textbook is actually written by 12 UCLA professors and is very highly regarded worldwide iirc.

wherever you go though, you’ll probably get a very nice education. That being said, if you want to go to grad school, a letter from a professor at UCLA will help you greatly.

UCSC also has a really great linguistic program too. Their program is recognized nationwide. Put that into your consideration.

@beyphy Yeah. UCLA has become my first option but I feel like my current GPA will not hold out. I currently have a 3.0 after last Spring and I’m planning on applying for it this November. I don’t have TAP, short 2 classes, but I have my IGETC. I can most likely finish all my pre-reqs before the next Fall though.

@sniperhunter I will look into UCSC to.

Oh here’s my initial question in this forum that really was never answered. Help…?

“Let’s say I’m trying to transfer to a UC. I, after Spring 2011, now have a 3.0(Pretty low, messed up, I know.) I would like to apply, during Fall 2011, for let’s say a UC. I have done all my IGETC requirements and have 60 units already. My question is that when I fill out the application to transfer for Fall 2012, does the school look at the CURRENT GPA and classes taken, 3.0 GPA and the current 60. Do they even wonder what I will be taking during Fall 2011, Winter 2012, Spring 2012, and Summer 2012…? Or would that year’s planned work not matter?”

The planned work will be put into consideration … later on. They will first look at your previous standing, then after you send them your Fall 2011 grades (somewhere in Jan - Feb), they will consider those new grades too. Final decision is available somewhere in April, but you still need to fulfill your contract by keeping your grades high in Spring 2012. So, you still have to report your “planned” / “in progress” course when you apply, and after the semester finish, you need to send them the transcript. Hope I don’t make you more confused lol

A 3.0 is quite OK for UCSC’s linguistic. I personally know a lad with 2.8 that got into that program. And btw, according to USNews, UCSC has two programs that ranked in the top 10 in the nation: Astrophysics and Linguistics :D

Oh really, I need to look into this. Linguistics. Hrmmm.

Well, I checked my UCTAG thing, just so I can use the GPA counter and I plan on taking the available Linguistics classes in my CC. After this summer right now, I would come out with a 3.0. For Fall, I used the UCTAG coursework thing to get my GPA. Planning on taking 17 units, let’s say I get straight A’s… well, I can only get it up to a 3.29 ballpark. It’s just, there are too many C’s floating around. I wish those can just disappear, I have enough units anyways.

Wouldn’t it be nice to just not mention some of the classes that you passed, right. :D

@beyphy:

UCLA’s APPLIED LINGUISTICS is #2 nation-wide, behind John Hopkins in the most recent NRC S-based Ranking. UCLA’s Linguistics has been ranked #20 or so. They’re 2 different departments with completely different focus. But again, the NRC ranking is more for graduate studies.

I don’t want to be a BananaSlug though.

But hey, let’s say you applied to UCLA. Would they even take into account your GPA let’s say after the Spring before the Fall you planned to transfer if you got accepted? Or any school?

Somehow I believe that the GPA of Spring prior to transfer is just as a mean to keep your contract. Basically, if you don’t keep the required GPA through spring, you’re doomed. If you get a high GPA that spring, they don’t really care because decisions are available in April, one month before most schools’ spring sems complete…

Btw, Banana Slug is cool!
lol

I can never get an answer to that question so I always just say that the Spring before you apply is the only GPA that factors in. It’s so confusing.

I wonder how tough it is to get into UCLA’s Linguistics and Computer Science program…

Me too. I wonder too. I don’t even know any statistical background for my major. I’m just thinking, hey, it’s UCLA, it should be competitive.

iwillflyby: this is fall 2010 admissions: [Profile of Admitted Transfer Students by Major, Fall 2010 - UCLA Undergraduate Admissions](http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/adm_tr/Tr_Prof10_mjr.htm)

3.54 average GPA admitted. 11 out of 24 admitted but only 8 enrolled… Aigoo. I wonder if that’s GPA after Fall.

If you’re worried, you can always stay at CC for another year to up your GPA…

That’s just it. I feel like I’m behind already. I feel like I’ve spent too much time already there and since the openings for transfer are only during the Fall, I’m really worrying about the upcoming one. I don’t know, I just want to transfer already, and since I finished all my GE’s already and really, there wouldn’t really be much classes to take in the CC anymore.

Is it possible to get the admission rates by major of other UC’s too?
