i'd love to major in linguistics, but no college in my state offers an undergraduate linguistics major. (i'm from south carolina, so it's not like there's an abundance of colleges here anyway.) so i'm thinking: major in modern foreign languages & minor in psychology, take some linguistics classes, do undergraduate research/independent study on linguistics, then go to grad school and get a Ph.D. in linguistics. what do you think?

Do any of the schools offer a cognitive science major? I think that would be more helpful in going into linguistics.

USC offers a linguistics major.

If you don't mind hopping the border, UNC Chapel Hill and NC State have good linguistics programs as well.

Not really, unless one plans to specialize in that aspect.

USC only offers a masters or ph.d. i promise. i was very disappointed when i found out.

and that link was to university of southern california, not university of south carolina. a common mistake, you're forgiven. university of south carolina's site is www.sc.edu.

They do seem to have a sort of undergrad program, albeit an interdisciplinary one.

I was born and raised less than 2 hours from Columbia. I know the difference. I did make a careless mistake in the link, though. ;)

bump......

Firefly,

Guess what? I'm in the same boat as you are. A SC student whose major (meteorology) isn't offered in SC. (As if very many are.) Don't know if you've checked this out or not, but there's something called the Academic Common Market. It allows you to go to certain out-of-state schools at in-state prices if your major is not offered in your state. The link to the site is http://www.sreb.org/programs/acm/acmindex.asp in case you're interested. Best of luck!

Travis

Wow, that's a very long list of schools. I'm definitely going to have to look into that. Travis, where are you planning on attending?

Actually, I'm hoping to go to Oklahoma U. (#1 meteorology program in the US) on Nat'l Merit, but my financial safety school is S. Carolina. Good luck, Firefly, and Merry Christmas!
