from the admissions office:

Admission to Clemson is competitive and mainly based on academic factors like class standing, grades, curriculum, and SAT/ACT scores. The school record is more important than test scores, and there is no cutoff point for SAT/ACT, class standing, or grades.

*Beginning with the entering class of 2006, Clemson will require a standardized test with a writing sample (i.e. the SAT or the ACT with the optional writing portion).

We require the following high school courses: English - 4 credits, Mathematics - 3 credits, Laboratory Science - 3 credits, Foreign Language - 3 credits* (All credits must be earned in the same language), Social Sciences - 3 credits, Other - 2 credits (One of these must be a fourth year of mathematics, laboratory science or foreign language) and (second credit must be in mathematics, computer science or a combination of these; or one unit of world history, world geography or Western civilization), Physical Education/ROTC - 1 credit.

*While we prefer to see three years of the same foreign language, students who only present 2 years of language will still be considered for admission.

For the entering 2009 class, 45% of the freshmen graduated in the top 10% of their high school class, 69% graduated in the top 20%, and 97% finished in the top half of their class. There is no set cutoff point for SAT I scores.

For the entering 2009 freshman class, the average SAT was 1225 and the middle 50% range was 1150-1310.

For the entering 2009 freshman class, the average ACT was 27 and the middle 50% range was 25-30.

SAT II subject tests are not required.

Other factors including choice of major, South Carolina residency, community service, school involvement, and work experience are given some consideration in the admissions decision.
