Link to Rendering of Third Phase of Science and Engineering Complex

Rendering of third phase of Science and Engineering Complex to be contructed this year across from Shelby Hall. Looks great to me. The Science Quad will be a very beautiful part of campus when the fourth phase of the complex is complete.

Looks great.

Looks great! The science quad is going to be really impressive when it’s done.

Thanks for posting the link!!!

Does anyone know if any of these new buildings serve computer science students? When we visited during Capstone Scholars weekend, the engineering open house was cancelled and so, we did not get to see where our DD would actually go to class.

It looks like right now, Comp Sci classes are held in a few different buildings…such as Lloyd Hall, HM Comer, and the new Science and Engineering Complex. I don’t know if the plan is to eventually move more classes to the Science and Engineering Complex.

Is your daughter Comp Sci or Computer Engineering?

My understanding is that Computer Engineering was located in the East Engineering Building, which was razed to make way for the third phase of the SEC. The part of Computer Engineering that was in the East Eng. Building relocated to the Science and Engineering Building adjacent to Shelby.

Right now she is saying CS. However, Dr. Sharpe made a pretty convincing pitch for an MIS major. Either way, she’s still on the fence about UA. Seriously, this process is wearing me down.

I hear you, thought we had it figured out, now another opportunity is looking interesting. CBH would have locked it up…

Thanks!!!

I can’t quite figure something out. It looks like the front of the building will curve with a wing extending from each end. But, in the the second link, the first pic looks like the building doesn’t curve. And, is that building that is shown in the lower left corner of that pic an existing building?

No, that is a different angle of Phase 3. The one above it is of the just finished Phase 2.

So, are you saying that the pics in link #9 has one view of Phase II (completed) and two views of Phase III (in progress)?

If so, I can see that now. :)

yes, that is what I see

Yes, the photo in the upper left-hand quadrant is clearly SEC Phase II.

feeno…

do you know if (and when) HM Comer will be torn down? Does it sit on the spot where Phase IV will be going?

Mom,

The Phase 3 of the SEC is being built where the recently razed East Engineering Building and its parking lot were located. HM Comer will be razed at some unknown date to make room for the final Phase 4. Since the funding for Phase 4 was secured last year, my guess is that UA will prepare to raze HM Comer once the Phase 3 building is completed. It will be just as big or almost as big as Shelby, so I imagine they plan on moving the departments and classes currently housed in HM Comer to the Phase 3 building. Also, since most of Shelby and Phase 2 house non engineering science departments and classes, I imagine that this will be the first new building on campus devoted almost entirely to Engineering.

Ahh…thanks!!!

I think some alumni were wanting to preserve it for historical purposes, even though (fun fact) the engineering school was originally housed in BB Comer, where the foreign languages department and international student center now reside. That’s why the boiler was (is still?) there.

I don’t MIB (HM Comer) will be torn down for a while. The civil/construction/environmental engineering department is still there. Also, the MTE department’s foundry is there. And, as you son will soon find out, the chemical engineering department’s high bay lab is there. All those things have to move (I guess to SEC III) before they can tear MIB down.

^^^

Are these things all movable? Sounds like some pretty heavy equipment.

I think some alumni were wanting to preserve it for historical purposes,

That’s somewhat understandable as long as the building isn’t sitting in the spot of Phase IV. Is it?

If not, I wonder if it can be renovated to look nicer and fit in with the new complex?

HM Comer is one of the less attractive buildings, but IMO Houser is really unattractive, especially the AC unit hanging above the entrance. If you look at the Master Plan, HM Comer will be gone at some point. Looks to me like Phase 4, which again, has secured funding, will be built there.
