So, it’s possible to build Phase IV without tearing down HM Comer?

I agree that HM Comer isn’t the most attractive building, but cosmetic improvements might be possible to make it work with the new buildings. It’s not too bad looking. It does need an interior face-lift, too.

Looking at this excerpt from the campus master plan, Phase III is going behind Houser Hall (and appears to also connect to it) and Phase IV is going right on top where MIB (HM Comer) stands right now.

It makes no sense to me why they would tear down MIB when they’ve renovated it so extensively. Just this past summer, they refurbished the auditorium/lecture hall.

I honestly don’t know what they’re going to do with the foundry and high bay lab, because as you point out, the equipment there isn’t something you can haul away on a dolly. For example, the evaporator in the high bay lab is three stories tall. One thing I could see them doing is tearing down everything but the wings of MIB since that’s where the heavy equipment is. They could then build around the old wings to incorporate them into the new building.

Ahhh…I didn’t know that. I was in the HM Comer auditorium last spring, before the redo. That sounds like they’re not going to demolish it. HM Comer is not bad looking (see link above), and if it needs a few cosmetic improvements to make it work with Phase III, then I imagine that will happen.

Thanks for adding the “aerial view”…it does look like HM Comer is staying and that Phase III will connect to it - nice for when the weather is bad.

nope, HM Comer is definitely going. The grey building just north of the future phase 4 is not HM Comer, but the Bevill Building. We just dont know exactly when it will be razed. They may have had to have done the renovations regardless of future intentions. They may have had no other choice.

I’m confused. I wasn’t talking about the building north of the future Phase 4.

I was referring to the gray building that is showing to be “attached” to future Phase 3. Is that not HM Comer (almost in the center of the pic). It’s hard to tell since it’s a drawing.

The building attached to future phase III is current Houser Hall. You can tell this because the building immediately to the west is obviously the Ferguson Center. What’s probably confusing you is the road the north of future phase IV and current Shelby Hall (phase I) - you may be thinking that’s current Campus Drive West. In actuality, the rendering shows the current Campus Drive West as being converted to a green way and a new Campus Drive West passing north of the existing Ferguson parking deck and by-then gone Ferguson parking lot and connecting to Hackberry Lane north of Shelby Hall.

Does it make more sense now?

Oh yeah, I see that now that I’ve looked at…

So, in the rendering…is HM Comer “gone”…or am I not seeing it?

I now see that Phase III is going in right below HM Comer and behind Houser Hall. So, they don’t need to tear down HM Comer while working on Phase III.

But, to put Phase IV in, they either need to demolish HM Comer, or take part of it down and use part of it.

I think that’s how it’s going to go as well.
