Lipa

Does anyone know anything about LIPA?

…held walk-ins at Unifieds…I auditioned…they liked me and invited me to callbacks later that afternoon…however, I had an audition with DePaul, and I could not make it to callbacks…I sort of regret it.

It stands for Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts.

It is a relatively recent program. It was founded about ten to twenty years ago by Sir Paul McCartney. He took an old British boarding school (one he used to attend), and refurbished it into an Performing Arts Institution. I believe the program is a three-year BA course, as is most of the British schools (In England, they do not have BFAs, and BA courses are just as rigorous as our conservatories). They have connections to the Royal Shakespeare Company and the New Globe (and I want to say the Donmar Warehouse Theater in London, but I am not entirely sure). I believe twenty-some people are admitted every year. Only 2-5 people from the United States are usually invited…there are a series of callbacks…one later on in the day of the original audition…another in Liverpool.

That is all I can remember.

They have a somewhat British philosophy on the craft…they do not see one particular method to acting, and they do not instruct just one method. They want their students to take an eclectic approach…

Thanks for the info. My son has been accepted and I just wanted to know a little more about it.

LIPA also has a relationship with University of the Arts in Philadelphia. The program started out as an exchange program over winter break but is in the process of expanding to a more comprehensive one.

We decided against LIPA because the trips home would be a little pricey! D loved the audition and callback at Chicago. I would be interested to hear from anyone out there who attends LIPA.

I won’t speculate as to why, but LIPA is not accredited by the UK’s [National Council for Drama Training](http://www.ncdt.co.uk/index.php?area=training&pagegroup=courses) which I understand to be pretty important over there …

No joke on the trips home…not to mention my almost 18 year across the ocean. The good news about my husband’s travel is we get the miles.

My daughter accepted at LIPA. What were you able to find out?

Well…he is going to go. It looks like a great opportunity. We are struggling a little with cost, student visas and what-not but the internation team at LIPA is very helpful.

Is your daughter going to attend?

Correcting this for the record for future generations looking here. LIPA is an accredited college in the UK. CMDT website has the school listed under the DRAMA schools
