Lesmizzie has brought up an excellent point: Your first focus should be on finding schools where any special support your daughter might need will be available.

I also wanted to mention another factor with regard to financial aid: Your best bet for a well-structured financial aid package (i.e., more grants than loans/work study) is typically going to come from schools that are matches or safeties for your daughter's grades and test scores. Reach schools tend to be less generous in terms of package structure for kids who just squeek in.

At Beloit, yes, they are pretty hard and fast about the GPA cutoffs, especially for the highest merit scholarship. And, they take the on-campus interview for that scholarship VERY seriously. I can't address how flexible Lawrence is with their merit awards as I don't have first hand knowledge.

I would look at W&M- great anthropology department (and I disagree with the mom that said Sociology and anthro are the same- greatly depends on what kind of anthro!). Dr. King in anthro has written several very influential books on non-human primates. W&M has decent need based aid- but her admission there is not a sure thing unless she really shows interest and has a great essay.

I did not say that anthro and sociology are the same but for most high school seniors who do not know exactly what they are going to do, it would make sense to look at schools that have either/or anthro and sociology. My daughter's major IS anthropology/sociology - that's one major (plus education).
