D loves MT. She started her college research thinking a BFA MT program was what she wanted, but the more she studies the programs, the more it worries her that her four years of college would be consumed by theater, song and dance, with almost no room to explore/learn anything else.

Now we're scrambling to look for BFA programs that encourage -- and make room for -- broader learning, and strong BA performance programs where students aren't totally overshadowed by BFAers. (It would totally depress her to never have shot at being cast in a college musical.)

D:
Strong singer/actor, good dancer, also likes directing
Good student, bad tester (reading disability)
3.67 GPA (unweighted, lots of IB and AP classes)
23 ACT (took twice, won't again)
We live in the midwest. Open to anywhere, but happy to find midwestern gems.

We would love to hear thoughts about these schools and ideas for others...

Muhlenberg - just visited. LOVED theater program, worried that the rest of the place feels kinda subdued. Is it?

Chapman - visited, loved it. Going back for required theater interview. Might be a stretch because of test score. Will strong theater skills/experience counteract that? No clue.

Ruled out: Northwestern (she'd never get in stat-wise), Indiana U (terrible rep for out of state aid)

What sort of college is she drawn to in terms of size? Urban/suburban/rural? We really loved the BA-MT program at Alabama when visiting and auditioning there. Huge university with huge school spirit and a beautiful campus. But they only hold on-campus auditions.

For non-audition schools, take a look at Christopher Newport or SUNY Oswego. UNH just added auditions, but they are a BA program. Take a look at the Big List by Program Type, pinned at the top of the forum, for a full list.

Both Marymount Manhattan and Wagner are strong performance based auditioned BA’s which allowed room for more gen eds that most BFA’s. They also offered my D great merit aid. Check out Rider as well. Also good merit aid offered. It’s a BFA, but I seem to remember they had opportunities for minors/double majors in other fields.

We loved Muhlenberg when we visited for D’s scholarship audition and met Charlie Richter (a must-- lovely helpful man!). The only person we actually know who attends there is a dance major and she loves it. The school has a great reputation in the area–we have friends who live in Baltimore who say great things about it. Not sure if that helps…
Their other concentration seems to be pre-medical fields.
