Im on my friend's account and an applicant for the class of 2013. If I can't fit all of the books I've enjoyed in the past year into 300 characters can I put more in the additional information section?

there's a reason that limit's there.

Why do you need to put every book you read down? Just put the ones you liked the most.

Class of 2013? You know the application is not up for that class yet, right? You'll need to rewrite the application in September when the online app becomes available anyway, so just relax. It's March. Focus on your schoolwork now, and not completing last year's application.

Also, I might add that Columbia's undergrad admissions office often stresses the point that less is more(they discourage you from sending any supplementary materials). You should focus on conveying a passion through as short an application as possible while still providing them the information they need. They want to know what books you've enjoyed MOST and what activities you've been PASSIONATE about, not every book you've ever read, and every activity you've ever participated in. Just list your top books. And, all in all, the portion of the application to see what books you've read is not weighted heavily compared to other parts in your application(transcript, SAT scores, ECs, etc.).
