List of (mostly merit-) scholarship info websites

I've done a good bit of browsing looking for merit-based scholarships for both my D's over the past few years, and put together a 'list of lists' with good info about such scholarships. I cleared this with the CC moderators - go ahead and enjoy...

CAUTIONARY NOTE: I does not vouch for the legitimacy or reliability of any of the scholarships listed below. Applicants should beware of scholarship programs requiring application fees.

wow, thanks for this!

Thanks so much for sharing your list with all of us. I copied the list into Word, so that I can check the sites out at my leisure.

Wow, thanks so much. There sure is a lot of info! Really appreciate your sharing.

I have save it into mu computer, will check them one by one

Thanks so much for that.

Don't overlook local scholarships. Check out your school counselor's office. Do this your JR year. Get copies of the applications so that you know what is required and can work on areas in which you are weak. Set up a file of applications appropriate to your circumstances, by due date. Actually fill them out. Carefully and neatly. Typed. And do them even when you think that its just stupid and you would rather do something else. A lot of other people thought the same thing.

Especially check out merit scholarship opportunities from the individual schools which is often your largest source of aid. If you think that your FAFSA is not your friend, check out especially which schools allow for stacking. This can make all the difference in the world.

Do well on your PSAT. This opens up a world of opportunities.

And check right now for college scholarship deadlines, as they are often much earlier than application deadlines.

If you are willing to take this seriously, I am telling you that you may be very surprised at the very happy mail that you begin to receive. This is very hard work. And time consuming. But I can tell you from experience that a free ride to college overshadows all the annoyance associated with this effort.

And additionally, the self reflection and skills gained are an enormous additional benefit that will be of immediate use when you get to college.

Good luck!

Who are UCI students? Some of these scholorships I looked at said you have to be recommended by UCI and have to be UCI students

I am not maintaining a website, I just posted the information for anybody who wanted to look at it. I would suggest that you do your own research if you want to find out any more information.

However, just this once - I assume you are referring to
http://www.honors.uci.edu/scholarships.php?t=main

I would assume that 'UCI' means University of California, Irvine, as it says in big fat letters at the top of their website. You would have got the same answer if you did a search for 'UCI student' in the internet.

oh my gosh thank you so much :) none of these are for me, i guess, but they should be helpful for my sister....god, she's so careless about college tuition when she's a junior already....

Thank You!!

I am going to add to this list a little bit. These links are to scholarship sites OR scholarship search sites that are recommended by the college I go to (UCCS). I thought they might help those who need even more places to check for scholarships!

same warning goes for this list -- I am not recommending these and beware of scholarships that ask for money.

there may be a duplicate or two, I just checked the two lists really quickly.

I am sure there are many more out there.

There can be a lot of overlap in these databases. If you only have time to use a few, some of the more comprehensive are:

www.fastweb.com
www.lunch-money.com
www.scholarships.com

Fastweb is my favorite for the following reasons:

-It allows you to put in your interests (say, if you have a knack for graphic design it will have contests for you to design a magazine cover, for example) and customize your scholarships to these interests; also your majors you're interested in. that way, you don't get a HUGE list of scholarships that you would never touch
-You can enter the colleges you applied to. You then get a customized list of scholarships those colleges offer and would be of interest to you
-And, also, it finds internships/jobs for you.

Thank you for this awesome work !

thanks for all of this! even though scholarships are hosted by a particular college, does that mean that scholarship only applies to that school? or is it just a scholarship in general?

SusanMa:
Usually, college sites list scholarships specific to that college PLUS national / state-level scholarships that students from that particular college would be eligible for. High-school sites have a broader scope, as you might expect.

I've run several scholarship workshops... here's what I tell students and parents.

1) Start local
* Looking for scholarships focused on your geographic area is a great place to start your search
* Common organizations that offer scholarships include community foundations, Lion’s Clubs, and Kiwanis Clubs.

2) Check with schools
* If a student already knows where they plan on attending college, they should investigate the opportunities available at that school
* Many schools use the admissions application as the scholarship application, while some have a separate application that will qualify a student for all available awards. The process varies by school.

3) Don't forget to investigate member organizations / associations
* Often times, clubs, unions, or other membership organizations offer scholarships to both their members and children of their members
* A number of companies also offer education reimbursement and scholarships to employees and their families

4) The Internet can be a quick hit
* Scholarship search engines such as www.CollegeToolkit.com / www.Fastweb.com can be great tools for finding scholarships along a number of criteria at once
* These types of sites typically only take ~5 minutes of up-front work to find a personalized list of scholarship awards

A quick note about scholarships and financial aid:
While it is important to look for scholarships to help lower the cost of an education, for most students, completing the FAFSA should be the top priority.

Can anyone tell me whether all types of merit scholarships (even full tuition ones) are usually also available to foreign students? Or is there a category national merit scholarships for only US Students and other merit scholarships for both US and non-US citizens?

And which top 50 schools give out substantial merit scholarships to international students? Thanks for sharing.

I noticed one site missing from the lists:

www.ScholarshipExperts.com

1740 Scholarship providers, 4800 scholarship programs, literally billions of dollars in aid. Local, college-specific, major-specific, merit-based, need-based, minority, disability, association membership-based, employment-based, etc.! Fill out a profile and the awards are all strictly filtered to match your individual situation. You might end up seeing slightly fewer awards than at other websites, but they are all awards you will be eligible for.

More info and more accurate than Fastweb, we just have less ads and less publicity. :)
