List of schools going to their waitlist

Hey, why is it always the tuba player?
We actually have a tuba player student…they’re not that rare!

^ (((Sorry in advance)))

Alas the poor tubist – what shall we say…

How about happy International Tuba Day…

(The next International Tuba Day, celebrated annually on the first Friday in May, is scheduled for May 7th, 2010).

This will be interesting to watch–as the list grows…
I do know of a student who got into a super reachy school and then chose elsewhere because the other school offered a full ride.

And I know of a few others who got into really ncie privates and chose the state flagship (money drove the decision)

In this time/economy I am sure that parents and students are considering the debt load …and when all the FinAid packages are reviewed…colleges may be surprised

is Texas A & M really still taking apps? my youngest is just starting to look at colleges (he is a sophomore) and he is very interested in Texas A&M, but out of state. I thought that it filled with instate students? (He wants to join the Corps of Cadets).

as this list grows, it would be great if one of the more senior posters on CC could speculate what this means for admissions next year…I think I have an idea, but curious what others think…

Aggie here. The Corps of Cadets has always taken OOS students – and some internationals too. The freshman year is very challenging – might be a good year to take some of the required classes (Political Science or American History) instead of loading up on too many engineering classes. There is a “suggested” course of study for every major but you don’t have to things exactly in that order.

Things have changed. 25 years ago, any B or B+ student was a strong admit. It’s gotten far more competitive so tell S to keep the grades up.

Meanwhile, we wait to see what this year’s “melt” looks like.

I saw on the CalPoly threads that some kids are being accepted from the waitlist.

In another blog that I subscribe to I read that some admissions people had expressed their concern that many students are making deposits to secure their position at the school but NOT taking their names off waiting lists at multiple schools. So that while May 1 used to be a time when schools could sort of sit back and calculate their yield, that this year they will not be able to. The blog mentioned that next year required deposits might be higher to make sure that students are serious. I hope not!

The schools have a good idea ahead of time what fraction of merit scholarsihps will be accepted, and give out way more offers than they have budgeted for.

No offense to anyone, but if a school wants a student bad enough to offer merit aid, I gotta think they would have accepted him/her first time around. If the last guy accepted RD didn’t get a merit scholarship, why would anybody expect that the school would offer it to the first guy off the wait list?

(Unless there aren’t enough full-pays on the waitlist to fill the class, and a few $K of merit money will bring in a non-need family.)

2flipper2: Admissions people are concerned? what are the kids supposed to do? not deposit into a school by May 1st?..that’s ridiculous…

Absolutely we had S make a deposit! He’s not interested in a gap year – and he might NOT make it off the wait list. Ye Gods, sometimes a school will take only 3 or 4 off a wait list of 100+. It’s crazy not to go ahead with other plans.

It is an interesting lesson in “different strokes for different folks.” First S was also wait listed at a school he liked – but that wait listing did not resonate with him at all. He was off to an acceptance spot and did not look back.

We’re taking a wait list spot as a possibility – no more , no less.

It sounds like if you need FA and are on are on a waitlist, you have no shot of coming off?

Thanks for making this thread! It’s really helpful! I’m checking every day to see if my school has been added. Not yet!

borghugh-
that is a common myth here.
However, schools which guarantee to meet 100% of need still maintain that pledge for waitlisted students. I know, because I called and asked (last year and this) several schools at which my kids were waitlisted. Most of the schools to which they applied were the 100%-of-need type - when I called, they said that students on the waitlist would be treated just the same as any other student with respect to financial aid.

Never hurts to call the school and ask (applies to ANY question you have).

Interesting part is that some calculate need differently, but some of the top schools seem to meet more than FAFSA EFC.
