so my roommate and I are trying to come up with a list so we can bring the things we're most comfortable buying and bringing (since he lives closer to IN)

So far only things I came up with are

TV
Fridge
Gaming system
Futon? (wouldn't it be heavy and burdensome to bring...?)

what else should I add to the list? you know the things we share and have to decide on who's bringing what

If you are in a typical 12x12 dorm with a roommate, where will the futon go? I had a regular dorm last year and the only option for something that big would have been nailing it to the ceiling, lol! But yeah, maybe there's room for it where you'll be living. Would you want a rug, or is that not something guys want in their rooms?

i would wait a couple of weeks after you move in to buy a futon or couch. i mean then you can see how much space their is in your dorm and if you even need one. and definitely buy one near campus, it wouldnt make any sense shipping it.

Not sure about hotpot and coffee maker though...

so these things are all my roommate and I need to discuss? TV, Fridge, gaming system (actually he just emailed me and said he's brining a wii :) yay)?

and I don't know whether I should choose to buy TV or a fridge. Granted, fridge would cost less, but it'll be bulky and burdensome when I move out, right?

metsman90, thanks for the link. However, I already saw the list, but I just wanted more specific list of things my roommate and I should bring to use together.

My tv is 20-21" (PLENTY big, trust me) and was about $100. It doesn't have a DVD included, but I brought mine from home anyway. My mini-fridge was about the same price. Both at Wal-mart.

(How can they not allow microwaves??? I would've DIED my freshman year without one! How exactly are you supposed to make easy mac or ramen now??)

It is not necessary to have a microwave in your room. In each dorm, there is at least one. I know that in my dorm, there was one on every floor - six including the ones in the basement kitchen and foodsales.

I would recommend buying a minifridge. It's one of the most useful things ever.

See, my dorm didn't have a microwave in the kitchen, for some unknown reason. Well, my freshman dorm did, but it was old and scary and looked like it might explode at any moment during use (it looked suspiciously like an old microwave my grandmother had when I was little that caught itself on fire). It's still a bit inconvenient not having one in your room though innit? You have to run down the hall/stairs with your food and wait there however long for it, instead of just being able to check your email in the wait time or something.

Minifridge in the room is VITAL though, even if there's a community fridge as well. People steal food ALL THE TIME out of those things, it was ridiculous. I had to keep my big bottle of apple juice in there because it wouldn't fit in my mini and people kept drinking it! Also, our freezer part was really tiny on our mini so often we had to keep frozen food in the Public fridge, and PEOPLE WOULD STEAL OUR LEAN CUISINES. Those things are not cheap! And they had our names on them and everything. Try to keep as much food as you can in your room. People are cheapos and WILL steal your food to avoid having to spend money to buy their own.

My friend bought a "Hot Pot" at Linens n Things ($12). Water boils quickly in one. Voila!! Mac n Cheese or Squiggly Noodle Soup. My friend made mac n cheese as soon as she got it home.
