This is just blind, uninformed prejudice. Many of the Midwestern LACs are more ethnically, racially, and geographically diverse than their Northeastern counterparts. Compare Grinnell–a “deep Midwestern” LAC with outstanding science programs–to Bucknell, a Northeastern LAC with a generally positive reputation.

% African-American: Grinnell 5.5%, Bucknell 3.1%
% Asian: Grinnell 7%, Bucknell 3.2%
% Hispanic: Grinnell 7.4%, Bucknell 4.5%
% Caucasian: Bucknell 80%, Grinnell 57.3%
% International: Grinnell 12%, Bucknell 5.2%
% OOS: Grinnell 88%, Bucknell 76%.

% from home region:
Grinnell (Midwest): 41.2%
Bucknell (Northeast): 83.4%

Now you tell me; which of these schools has the more “homogeneous” student body? The Northeastern school that is overwhelmingly white, with a student body consisting overwhelmingly of Northeasterners? Or the Midwestern school that is just barely majority white, with all non-Caucasian racial groups much more strongly represented, much more strongly international, and less than a majority of its student body coming from its home region? I’d say Grinnell is the more diverse school in a landslide, and Bucknell by far the more “homogeneous.”

And on top of that, Grinnell is just a better school. You might prefer Bucknell because you prefer to stay in your Northeastern bubble, but to say it’s because of diversity is just total B.S.
