Would it be acceptable to list Fight Club as one of my top two or three favorite movies in a college application to Stanford and other top schools? I want to be honest with my answers but I don't want to cross into risque territory.

why not? your being quite frank? i don’t see anything wrong with being honest… BUT due to increasing violence and casualties( shootings etc) on campuses, I am not sure what to say to that.

I would assume that anything non pornographic or “Jackass” will be good.

You are violating the first rule of Fight Club, which is, “Don’t talk about Fight Club.”

Follow your initial hunch–avoid listing it as a favorite. College adcoms are very touchy about violence after the VA Tech , and other episodes.

Well, it is a great movie.

I listed Once Upon a Time in America as my favorite.

Would the violence in Fight Club be differentiated from the violence in a war movie such as Patton or Enemy at the Gates?

Fight Club isn’t really THAT violent compared to a lot of action movies. It is mostly about a philosophy

I did. I don’t think it’d be a problem.

The whole point of the movies section is probably to see if the films you like correlate with the personality you show. Or perhaps they want to make sure you have some leisure time and don’t spend all your free time studying.

Just b/c someone likes fight club doesn’t mean they’re violent… It would be so stupid for an adcom to judge someone violent just b/c they like that movie. Unless you have activities involving violence or a angry personality, it should be fine to list it.

Would definitely be safer than the Departed.

I don’t see a problem with that. I’m tying into my common app essay how meeting Chuck Palahniuk (my favorite contemporary author) and getting advice from him has influenced my passion for writing and literature. He’s written stuff way, way more violent/disturbing than Fight Club, so I doubt mentioning one of his milder books (-turned-movie) will hurt you.

I’m a petite, very shy, sort of preppy girl and I love Chuck Palahniuk’s books. Doesn’t mean I have an alter-ego or rig buildings with explosives in my spare time.

^ yea, the movies i like/books i read have nothing to do with my personality either :P

There is no problem with this, just pick a movie you really like.

If I had to answer that question, I’d answer probably either Casino, Scarface or No Country for Old Men. The latter being the best picture winner from last year. All of those movies are violent, but Scorsese, De Palma and the Coen brothers are highly respected directors, you’re supposed to appreciate these films.

It’s incredible to me that someone would try to link a favorite movie with the VA Tech shooting, that’s ridiculous, pick a movie you like, that’s why they ask.

it doesnt matter at all what you put.

they dont check if it relates to your personality…

imo theyre just looking to weed out kids so nerdy that they cant even list favorite movies…

lol zzzboy. I wish I knew how to quote. :(

Oh please, unless it’s like porn XXX or something it’s fine. What’s up with the everyone’s “Oh I don’t want to even touch upon trivial factor X because it’ll hurt my chances” or something…

EDIT:
