When applying for a school in November, do I really list all the volunteer hours I've done UNTIL November? Odd question I know, but I was thinking about adding some extra hours onto my application while continuing to volunteer in December and January.

If you didn't understand that, I'll try my best to explain. I'm currently a Senior in highschool who has done small amounts of volunteering in the past. I'd say about two hours every Sunday. The schools I want to apply to have an application deadline for November. At this time, I've done about 85 hours. My real question is, can I include the hours that I WILL be doing in December and January? Because 100+ hours looks a lot nicer than 85 hours, in my opinion.

Is this considered lying? I mean, I WILL be doing the volunteer work. It just so happens that the deadline is early. I feel really bad and embarrassed for asking this, but I just want to know. I do the volunteering because I enjoy it, but fitting in extra hours on an application always sounds nice :)

How is this any different than listing the classes you’ll be taking 2nd semester? It’s all the same. You’re providing a good faith estimate of your intent.

hey, I was actually thinking about this. My situation, I’m in a big club and theres a state-wide convention every year in April. It’s 3 days long and I’m given 72 hours of community service. If I know for sure that I’m going to go to the convention, can I include an extra 72 hours to my application?

I’m actually gonna go against the grain and recommend that people only put hours that they have already completed. Colleges understand that apps are due early in the year. They know that students’ activities and involvement will extend beyond the deadline. There’s no need to exaggerate your involvement by putting down hours you haven’t actually completed. I mean April? Really? You will already have your admissions decisions by then :P
