Shimex, I’m a future ChemEng and i’ll probably be in sutherland or holland b/c i really disliked the feel of Towers… It would be nice to be in space but it’s not that far a walk if we need help haha.

Some of the advantages of Space: near lots of freshmen engineers so easier to work on projects together. Centrally located with Market Central/Taco Bell/Quick Stop in the basement. Dr. Budny and the freshmen engineering advisors have held meetings/get togethers in the SPACE lounge. Easy to get to and from most of your engineering classes. Son had an hour breaks during his schedule so he was able to run back to Towers to eat at MC, do laundry and other tasks. Don’t believe he could have done it if he had to go up and down the hill to Sutherland especially during the cold/inclement weather. It is also a plus when projects are due, there is no need to travel to/from another building especially at night. It is very likely your team members will be living in the Towers and college students like to stay up very late!

The Towers dorms are small but son was set on living in SPACE (I thought Sutherland was much nicer). He has enjoyed it 150% and does not regret his decision to live in a smaller dorm. Unless you apply for the honors or specialized dorms – there is no guarantee you will get what you put as your first choice. I am sure you will make friends wherever you end up living :)

Does anyone know about the Honors housing? I believe it’s in Forbes? Are the dorms nice and how far are they from the Cathedral and the dining halls? Are they really isolated? I’m not sure what I want to do about housing yet. I was originally thinking Tower B but I’m not sure that I want to do that. From this thread, Sutherland sounds very nice so maybe I’ll give that one a second thought. I do want to find out about Forbes though.

Also if Sutherland is mostly athletes would I feel really out of place being there if I’m not at all an athlete…? I’ll support the sports but you won’t see me participating in them, haha.

To me, it seems like Sutherland has equal athletes and non-athletes. Plus, these athletes aren’t the crazy football/basketball player types, they’re track, softball, etc. Doesn’t really seem to be a huge ‘sports culture’ at Sutherland if that’s what you’re worried about.

Clarinetz,

My daughter lives in the honors housing at Forbes. It’s pretty nice, the size of the rooms varies, some have plenty of space with the beds unbunked, others leave very little space unless the beds are left as bunks. Some rooms have balconies. I think every 2 rooms share a bathroom which does not include a shower. Communal bathrooms, separate for each sex, with showers are located on every floor. There is a laundry room and a lounge on each floor. On the second floor (first floor is mostly the medical bookstore) there is a rec room and kitchenand a balcony. Forbes is four blocks from towers, stores and restaurants in between. The thing Forbes lacks besides besides a dining hall or coffeee shop is a fitness center, locally they can use Lothrop’s. There is an online view of a room (looks like one of the smaller ones) and a floorplan at Panther Central (from pitt.edu)
