Literature Subject test vs. AP Eng Lang

Just wondering...is the Literature Subject test about as hard as the AP Eng Lang test?

I know that the formats are drastically different, but was just wondering if it would be
really hard in comparision--and whether or not much extra preparation would be necessary to take the Lit. Subject test.

Our D took AP Eng Language last year and scored a 5 on the exam (only 7% in the country scored a 5) and she said the Eng Lit Subject test (took Jan 24) was MUCH harder. She gets her score this Thursday.....wish I could tell you what it is but we will have to wait! She did not do much to prepare for the test basically due to time constraints, and she felt that taking AP Language last year and AP English Lit this year did more to prepare her than a study guide. But, that being said, I would guess working on a practice test a few times would be worthwhile.

Not a valid comparison.

SAT II Lit and AP Lit, however, is.

The MC section of the Lit AP is very, very similar to what you'll encounter on the SAT II.

I took both. I got a 5 on lang and a 710 on lit without any prep. I retook lit this jan. (again without prep) and I think I did better (750+). The MC section of the lang test and the SAT2 Lit are actually pretty similar, and if you're good at one, then you should do well in the other. The main difference with Lit is poetry and author focus IMO.

Thanks you all for the advice/info--it's really helping to clarify some things.

@ 252525: I hope your daughter did well on the test! Based on what you said I think I will do seperate practice tests for it.

@ kwu & Poisonous--that's true, the AP LIT test would have more to do with the LIT subject test. I am definitely going to have to study then.

thanks again=)

Does CR score correspond at all? I do very well on CR on the SAT but I haven't taken AP Lit yet and probably won't take it before I take the Subj test.

Yes I had the same results as Poisonus, I got a 5 on AP Lang. but a 680 on Lit without studing. I am in AP Lit now and realized how much that would have helped for the Lit SAT II which I believe is much harder.

Millancad -- from personal experience CR is much easier than the SAT II. My suggestion would be to work on analyzing poetry (the biggest diff. between them) and you should be fine on the SAT II if you did well on CR. Good Luck!

D got 710 on the Lit with very little studying (no time) and said her AP Lit was far more important in preparing her for the Subject test than AP Language. Also said it was a lot harder than CR on SAT. Hope this helps!

I agree that the Lit test was harder than CR. But as a junior, I'm only halfway through AP Lang and will not take AP Lit until next year; I felt like my Lang class did help with Lit. Prep consisted of reading through the Kaplan book in a day and taking diagnostic + 1 practice test.

(Scores: 760 CR in 8th grade, 80 CR PSAT, 800 Lit)
