Little Setback

Hey everybody, I'm sure by now you have seen me posting on the other UR boards and have reallized how much I want to go to UR, but my FinAid was really not good enough for me to go. I want to call the FinAid office and talk to them, but I'm scared out of my mind to do so. I'm about 4k/yr short of where I need it to be and I know getting a reevaluation is probably not going to happen. Does anyone know how the appeals process at UR works?

Im not sure how it works, but ive talked with Dean Burdick who is the dean of Fin Aid and he's a really nice, outgoing guy and I am sure if you talk to him about your position and how you really want to go to UofR, he should help you out. Just try, what would you have to lose?

tothemaxvro,
I am in the same boat as you are...

I plan on calling tomorrow. I want to go to UR so bad, I just hope that everything works out.

Hey, sorry to hear about your problem...I completely understand. Just know that there are a lot of options out there. Yes, i talked to a person who was at UR with me visiting, and he said he was not well-off financially, but he and his dad called, sent a letter and such to the financial aid office asking for them to give them more money...and I believe he was successful. If you tell them that you will come to UR 100%, and you are qualified, i'm sure that they can help you out...i'm very confident in fact. Also, other options are also up there, if worst comes to worst, you can still come to UR but then you can do some type of employment on campus to make a good 2k/3k a year..even during summer work full time hours..

keep us posted, i'm interested in knowing how this turns out..and as always, best of luck!

Well, I called today. They are going to take another look, but it didn't sound too great. They said they'd call back in a few days, so maybe it will turn out for the better, but I'm back in the waiting game again...College admissions seems to be one big waiting game.

best of luck buddy, i hope to see you next year :)

Agreed... for the first time in my life, I actually feel poor right now. I'm trying to appeal for more money, too. I asked for about 5,000 more, but I really need 8,000-9,000 more, and that's on top of the 12,000 I already got.

What makes me particularly angry is that my cousin says she got a full ride scholarship there. Not to be conceited, just bitter, but my GPA, test scores, etc are all higher. She asked why they chose her, and they said it was because of her involvement in debate and forensics. That would explain it, but I do debate and forensics too, and I've done just as well as she has... qualified for nats and everything. It's all so very frustrating.

man, i'm sorry :(

hopefully the appeal goes through - guys i'm pretty sure that if you express U of R as your primary school they will shell out the dough. Especially because the very qualified kids that probably got a lot of money decided to go to a different school, so that money could be used for those who truly want to go to u of r. best of luck kelly ! I'm rooting for you.

They called back, they were up-front about it, supposedly they have enough people who will enroll that they are only increasing aid in a very limited number of cases. So good luck Kelly05 and good luck to everyone who is going to UofR, I myself am probably going to the College of the Holy Cross, so I'm still really happy anyway.

man thats stinks. Well, at least you tried and good luck at Holy Cross

Gah. I'm sorry :( wish it could have worked out, so there is no chance of something going through for you? In this case, because of the fact that you liked U of R so much, you dont want to look at other options to help yourself financially? Like finding an on-campus job/work/study program?

Even with that included, it would still be quite expensive, besides I got nearly 3/4 tuition to CHC, so it's not exaclty like I'm stooping.

yeah. best of luck on your education my friend.

If anyone was wondering... I got 3k of the 5k I asked for, so I'm going to stretch the checking accounts and make it work. I hope you like wherever you end up, everyone =)

tothemaxbro, that really sucks =/. I feel terrible reading about your story. UofR is obscenely expensive and I expect to be fairly deep in debt by the time I come out of college, although my parents are working hard to minimize the debts I will inevitably face. I wish you all the best of luck at Holy Cross, and that scholarship sounds great! That should greatly ameliorate the financial burden of college for you, it seems.

hey you know, i have a friend whos dream since she was ababay was to go to berkley college of music, and then she finally got in this year, but she cant afford it--shes going to go to rutgers froshe year and then streach funds for the next three years at berklee---have you ever considered that?
