It wasn't pretty; both teams had to grind out points opposite stingy defenses (9 of Wesleyan's points were field goals) and Wesleyan had to run the clock for what seemed a good minute and a half on the last possession of the game. But, a win is a win even if it's a 16-14 nailbiter:Williams loses at Wesleyan, will finish under .500 for the first time since 1985 - Berkshire Eagle Online

Absolutely, CR. I watched it online and what seemed like a cakewalk started to become more and more precarious. But we made it! Now beat Trinity next week and it’s a PERFECT SEASON! President Roth will have to change the nickname from “Cardinals” to “the Cardinal Tide”.

I’m a Wes parent and very happy for the Wes football team. Still I couldn’t help being amused that this is a Little Three championship, meaning Wes has two competitors, and Wes hasn’t won it since 1970. It doesn’t seem like football has been a big Wesleyan priority in the past.

^It hasn’t. That’s partly what makes the win so special. Everyone knows of Wesleyan as kind of an artsy place (though, it’s no slouch in the sciences either) but, few people are aware that Wesleyan was a founding member of the NCAA.

This most recent rebuilding period began four years ago when Wesleyan “stole” the Williams football coach who happened to be a Wesleyan alum. However, I don’t think anyone was expecting this to be the year everything came together. Kudos to Coach Whalen and his patient, step-by-step recruiting process and to the talented freshmen who quite unexpectedly made big plays against both opponents. Significantly, Coach Whalen’s first act when the title was won, was to hand the winning football to his boss, the president of the university:

Great story. Speaks well of Belichick that he cares about his roots. Go Cardinals!

Congratulations to the Trinity Bantams in their 40-10 victory over our beloved Wesleyan. We still won the Little Three and tied for first in NESCAC but our first interceptions of the season and a tough Trinity dee postponed our big dream till next year. Wes will have 26 returning seniors on football next fall, so it will be another great team. And so congratulations to our 2013 footballers and their coaches for a fun and successful season.
