LIU Post's MT Program?

My daughter was accepted to LIU Post for Musical Theater after a walk on in Unifieds. She also received a very nice scholarship offer. We are from Brooklyn so I think she feels this school is not really “away.” She definitely wants a BFA program. We are visiting the school at the end of April. May I ask thoughts and opinions and pluses for her to attend this school? Thanks for all input.

@Jodi5260 Congratulations on the acceptance & scholarship!!

My D is doing a “shadow day” with an MT student in couple weeks. We’re from Maryland and know very little about the program except that her college audition recommended it to us. Said it is a fairly new BFA MT and she expects it to become a “reach” school in the next few years as it more and more people hear about it.

I suggest your D set up a day to visit and attend classes with current MT students to help her see if it feels right for her. Good Luck!

We visited last week and were impressed - some schools have flashier facilities, but my D liked the class she participated in and we both came away very impressed with the theatre students we each interacted with. They were so enthusiastic with the school and the training. Definitely worth the visit!

@Jodi5260 The obvious “Pluses” for us are the scholarship and location - admittedly Long Island is not downtown Manhattan, but it’s alot closer than where we live.

It’s so funny that most MT kids are dying to go to a college in NYC to be close the lure of Broadway, while those who’ve lived there already want to go “away”. The grass is always greener.

@liupostmtstudent I am writing for my D who is seriously interested in the MT program. She has been seeing some performances at other schools but I think we are too late for that at LIU, correct? I was wondering if there were any YouTube videos of productions that we could check out. Do you know? I couldn’t find any. We are planning on coming back over the next couple of weeks… maybe Accepted Student weekend. Thanks so much for writing in and sharing such great info.

@Jodi5260 - I’ll chime in on the pluses I see. The program offers a very strong acting foundation and my D has heard very good things about Suzuki. In this process of auditioning for both MT and acting programs, I kept hearing a theme from some of the Acting schools - that MT is just one genre of Acting and that acting is fundamental. This feels like the best of all worlds – having the strong acting program while continuing with vocal and dance development. I also like the networking and exposure to working with NY professionals. And, from our short visit, the people are really caring and nice… faculty, staff, and students. It felt like a community of artists sharing and growing together rather than a highly competitive environment… but that was just a gut feel from what the students were sharing.

Yes @missnypizza earlier on this thread I spoke about our first visit. We decided to go visit a few weeks ago (it’s about a 3 hr drive for us and I had never been plus she auditioned at Hofstra the next day). It was right before Spring Break so fairly limited but she observed a freshman acting class and showcase rehearsal… and thought the quality of the teaching was very good plus caring. She spent some time with students (as did I) and we both found the students to be highly engaged and positive about the program. She attended Syracuse Summer Theatre Intensive (taught by regular faculty) and learned a lot during that time so she uses that as a benchmark when evaluating other programs. We will post any new observations.

@missnypizza I am SO HAPPY for you and your daughter! I’ve been feeling your pain and praying for a Yes for you!

My daughter is also accepted to LIU for MT and we did a day visit this past Monday. She was on the fence about the school before, but now thinks it’s one of the best programs out there. May not be flashy, but the skill, caring and dedication of the theater faculty can’t be beat.

Another plus we found out – there is no cap on the credit hours/semester that a student can take - that means one flat tuition whether you take 12 hrs or 20+ hrs. That’s a good deal!
