I signed up!!!! :)

count me in

to support eradicating poverty in africa, you can also SMS your name to UNITE (86483) and the name shows up above the Live8 stage in Phili (mine showed up right when Linkin Park were playing :) )

Live8 is a complete waste of time. It only makes sensitive white people think they are helping those poor helpless Africans. If you want poverty to end in African, you need to wipe out most of the political leaders in Africa. Maybe a Dead8 concert would be a better start.

we are also doing that (wiping corrupt political leaders in africa) but currently those efforts have been concentrated on countries with more natural resources (as described in Iron Triangle, Times, etc) :p

Every 3 seconds a child dies from hunger and preventable disease in Africa. Shocking huh?

I did a speech on the crisis in Africa, but no one in my class seemed to care at all.

razorsharp, maybe you should just st fu and enjoy the show. not everything has to make sense. maybe go to one of the concerts and make some friends instead of staying at home wondering why you dont have any and then make lame excuses on why you arent interested to yourself so you will feel better. live8 is a celebration of correspondence between people, something you obviously lack.

sign the damn petition and help out. no one can predict the results, but it's better than sitting at the computer and debate about why it wont work when you dont know. cuz guess what, NO ONE GIVES A CRAP ABOUT WHAT YOU THINK

actually, razor is somewhat correct. The turn out wasn't as great as hoped and most people go there just for the music, not the cause. Anyway, sign me up. btw, i doubt this concert is going to do much to aid poverty in africa. Every year, billions(and increasing every year) of dollares are pumped to african leaders to distribute to poorer areas of the continent. guess what, rampant corruption means most of the money goes to gov officials for personal luxury use. In addition, it's really hard to efficiently distribute money all over africa considering it's so poor and lacks the essential tools.

You are missing the purpose of Live8. The purpose isn't necessarily to distribute money to the African nations. The purpose is to bring attention to the issue that there is a lot of poverty in Africa and also a large debt. The purpose of the concert was to show the world leaders that there is support and that they should cancel the debt that African nations owe, because they know that it will not get paid off. And having that debt just worsens the poverty in Africa.

The date that the concert was set for is no coincidence. It was set for today because there will be a G 8 conference in a few days. Which encompasses the eight most powerful nations in the world (hence Live8). So whether they showed up for the cause or the music.....there was still a large crowd. Large enough to hopefully convince the world leaders to cancel the African debt, therefore achieving the purpose of the concert.

Great, a worldwide concert brings attention now, but a few months from now, how many of you will care? This may generate hype now, but most people who are not effected by the actual African crisis might possibly be quite fickle and forget about this Live8 concert in good time. And anyway, this concert may have brought the attention of hundreds of thousands of young people, but the taxpayers of the respective Group of 7/Group of 8 nations will decide if they want to pay more money for foreign aide.

Well be a man about it then! Give all of your money and assets to the poor starving Africans. What? You are not willing to give all your money? How greedy of you? African dictators need your money now! Don't just sign a petition! Give all of your money!

I think it's extremely childish of you to mock an actual plight that is going on in the world. Not only that, but its also rude and disrespectful.

Guess you didn't read the guy's prior post. Maybe then you might understand my response.

Let's start all over. Here is the outcome of Live8: (1) white Americans and some other whites feel better about themselves; (2) African dictators and their armies feel well fed.

If I sound cynical is it because Live8 is part of the problem, not part of the solution. What I find disrespectful and insulting is treating Africans as if they are children whose world would be a little bit better if they could only have handouts from the West. I truly hope all of you compassionate people give as much of your hard earned money as you can to Live8. In five years when the place is just as bad or worse than it was before, maybe you will understand you had better odds at Vegas. Oh, don't worry, the Media will show pretty pictures of starving African children and tell you you have made a difference.

Sometimes love hurts.

Let's see if this article can open your eyes.

Exactly - it goes back to the old addage about giving a man a fish.

Countless money has been spent on Africa over the past 5 decades, and what has it accomplished? Absolutely nothing...

Roads have been built and allowed to crumble.
Factories were built, but lay idle because they lack fuel and management and stable government.
The pockets of the corrupt, wealthy politicians have been lined...

...but very, very little has been done. If anything aid has made the countries worse off. Food hand outs to people on poor land with no means for self-sustenance (and no effort toward such, either) have done nothing but allow even more population expansion and overpopulation. Obviously, aid cannot solely keep thier population expanding forever, and when it runs out the number of people that will starve may be exponentially larger than the number that would have had we never provided any aid.

Well said, razorsharp. What you said may be a little offensive and uncomfortable to a politcally correct America, but I find a lot of truth in it. Indeed, sometimes love does hurt. I see pictures of African children starving to death, and then I see teenagers in Philadelphia dancin' and screaming to Will Smith and Destiny's Child. I don't see the connection. Are these people really helping??? Or just looking for a way to have some fun?

I care about what he/she[razorsharp] thinks. And in large part I agree. No, live 8 is not a "celebration of correspondence between people", it's about helping starving and diseased people in Africa. It's not about having fun. And in many ways I think live 8 has turned into that, so that people from the western world can comfort themselves and hug each other and feel good about themselves when in actuality VERY LITTLE IS BEING ACCOMPLISHED.

well i didnt read all the prior post, but i just thought i'd point this out. i saw some of the concert and there was a big sign that said "WE DONT WANT YOUR MONEY, WE WANT YOUR AWARENESS" or something like that. anyway, wouldn't charging the people in the crowd for tickets and not giving the musicians gift bags be a better way to make a difference? i mean whats the point of raising awareness if there's no money to make a difference with. they could've donated all the proceeds from the concert and made well over a million bucks AND raised awarness all at the same time. but no, that wouldve made sense. whats the point of people just knowing about something? its no use if they dont raise money...

makes me feel better I'm not the only one actually thinking bout stuff like this. not just giving a hand out every once in a while, but wondering what will really help.

something I'm trying to figure out right now. Like there's an organization called Food for the hungry I try to donate to. It's a Christian organization and they say they aren't just giving out food but actually educating people and rebuilding the infrastructure of Africa. Course, all charities make themselves sound as positive and helpful as possible....

so does anyone know how I can do research on something like this? Like not just people's opinions or some isolated facts but something that will help me decide what to do? I'm thinking of starting a tutoring network with bout 10 of my friends and may raise 10 grand or something ( if I do a really good job advertising). but I can't do anything like that unless I know what I'm doing is the right thing.

so........... I dunno

I signed it even though it is completey useless and won't do anything. I am all for peace and the stoppage of world hunger, but com'on, someone has to be hungry, there always has to be poor people, and world peace is IMPOSSIBLE. It is the way society is. Stop paying athletes, actresses, and these stupid musicians millions of dollars they don't need, and invest it in helping others. While we cant solve anything, we can help.

There should be a NATIONAL BOYCOTT of the media every year for about two weeks, and the billions of dollars the media doesnt receive those couple weeks could help Africa and all there tribes that have failed to progress with technology over the last 2000 years.

I have mixed emotions.
