Living and Learning Communities - Pros and Cons?

I know there have been some discussions on honors' dorms, but what about dorm floors, where you're living with students who have the same major? Would you recommend it?

Sure, but only if the student wants to live there.

There is nothing handier than having 15 people all taking Calculus I on the same floor. It makes group study sessions very easy and handy.

I don’t recommend it if the student thinks its dorky or uncool. I was a resident advisor and had one person signed up on my floor by his mother against his wishes. (I was on a 22 hour quiet / study floor). Needless to say, he moved very quickly.

I don’t really see any downside if the student wants to live there. You may or may not hang out with your floormates regardless of common interests and you may or may not find other friends instead. You’ll find beer in most people’s fridge regardless of whether it is a regular floor or an engineering floor. You’ll have some party animals, some focused students, and some in between.

I lived on a 22 hour quiet floor that was comprised of 1/4 fraternity members who played soccer in the hall quite a bit of the time. Never figured that one out.
