apartments or regular dorms?

I think both are good in their own ways. When I visited, it seemed like the apartments were a bit far away from where the people take classes but maybe that was just me. I like the idea of the apartments, but personally I think I would choose the regular dorms, at least for my first year, because it seems like I'd get to know people easier that way. Also, I think you have to be on the full meal plan so I'd probably not use the kitchen much, anyway.

Just my two cents on the topic :)

I will decide on that once I visit them in mid-April

dorrrrrmmmmms

Is there any way that you can request a single?

The only traditional "singles" for freshman are in Gummere, although Barclay has three-person suites (3 rooms, 3 people), where the 2 side rooms basically act as singles. Both the apartments and the dorms have a distinctive social scene...I live in Barclay, and I never feel as though I've really had a fair deal of friends who live in the apartments until second semester. I personally like the dynamic of Barclay (we unarguably have the best hallways on campus and nice bathrooms), and I'm actually doing Customs on Second South next year (yes, you'll find out about Customs sooner or later).

You can't technically request a single (you make a decision on your housing application if you want to live in the apartments or the dorms by your bathroom preferences- co-ed or single sex). There's also a section for a paragraph about yourself, where I sneaked in a few not-so-subtle hints that I wanted to live in Barclay.

Good luck.

Could someone explain to me how exactly the co-ed bathroom situation works? Are there certain hours set aside for men or women to shower?

Apartment Bathrooms are obviously single-sex (one bathroom per apartment, one sex per apartment). In Gummere and Barclay, if you have 2 hallway bathrooms, you'll decide if you want both to be co-ed or each to be a different sex during Customs Week. Otherwise, if a bathroom is co-ed it means anyone can use it at anytime of the day (these are individual showers, not communal).

Matt, do you have any picture of your dorm so that we can see how it looks like?

if anybody wants a picture of a gummere dorm room - mine's one of the bigger ones - private message me, and i'll email it to you. i remember being really worried about my dorm room until someone on livejournal posted and said she'd had it freshmen year and told me about it, so i'm just paying it forward. ;)

do freshmen come a little earlier than the rest of the school?

I'd rather do dorms than apartments my first year, but that's a personal preference.

Customs Week is the orientation period (jointly run with Bryn Mawr) where frosh come to school early to meet one another and learn about the school. Your Customs People (like RA's, but during Customs Week, they're more like camp counselors) will also be around.

LOL, I'm way too embarrased by the messiness that is my room to divulge photos. Anyway, yes, freshman come 5 days early for Customs Week (it's actually only 5 days, but who's counting?) I'm a Custom Person for Class of 2009 , so, for all you frosh that get the INCREDIBLE opportunity to live on Barclay Second South, you'll eventually get the chance to see a dorm :)

Just in terms of making friends/meeting people, would you say that you are at disadvantage if you are in a single at Haverford?

not at all - a ton of people are in singles. customs week is a great way to meet people, so you don't really have to worry about that. and if you aren't in a single, you'll probably be in a suite so you'll have 2-3 people you can meet right off the bat.

Singles are WAY better...well, at least I love living in a single. I think everyone ends up liking wherever they're living. And dorms definitely are better for freshmen...apartments are just too far and are a bit isolated. Gummere and Barclay are more conducive to making friends and are much closer to everything. If you want to live in an apartment, do it when you can be off the meal plan and already have friends you'll choose to live with. Although I do know some awesome customs people living in the apartments next year...but wherever you are, you'll love it.
