Living Arrangements

I've enrolled at Michigan to study engineering next year, but I can't quite decide what to sign up for in terms of housing. First, I don't know whether to join the michigan research community, which is basically a residential college extension of UROP. It might get me into a more tight-knit community, but I'm not sure of any other benefits or detriments.

And if I don't do the MRC, I'm not sure whether I want to live on central or north. I might be around more engineers on north and I like all the open green space, but it seems like there's more to do on central. Does anyone have any advice?

Central is certainly more social. I’ve heard that if 3/4 or more of your classes are on North Campus (i.e. engineering classes, theatre classes, etc.), you should room on North Campus for convenience’s sake. However, from what I know, freshman engineering students’ classes are mostly liberal arts requirements (you might want to check up on that, I could be wrong) so it’s better to live on Central, where the LSA building is located. Do your research though, I’m not an engineering student, so I can’t back all of my facts.

On the other side of the spectrum, I’m voluntarily living on North Campus since 3/4 or more of my classes every semester will be a theatre class, and I want to live close to my classes, since I will likely be working in the studios a lot.

I really don’t know anything about engineering, but I think you should go with central. It’s much more fun than north and there is plenty of green, open space near the Diag to play frisbee, football, etc. Regardless, most of this grass will soon be covered in snow so it won’t really matter.

MRC is a good bet. Get to stay in Mojo, best dorm on campus. And dude right now you are a frosh so like youll have like only one engineering class on north campus. Central is where you wanna be. MRC is a good bet.

MoJo isn’t really a freshman dorm though. Will that be a big deal in terms of meeting people and making friends?

i mean its hill still and youll be eating with all the other freshman in the hill dining center. And there will be alot of other frosh in MRC. I mean it doesent sound like itd be too big a deal. you can end up not liking people in your hall anyways. residence doesent determine your social life. if you live on hill youll be around ALL the freshman and youll eat with all of them so its just better to have a nice place to live like Mojo right?

Disagree with post 6

I know many people who said they wish they would have considered their dorm selection more, changed their hall, or got their first pick. More than likely, from what I was told, as a freshmen being in a hall majority freshmen your more than likely to have a larger social life… yet still meet many upperclassmen.

After visiting, I totally agree with Coolbrezze… that’s the way to go
