It's no secret that not everyone goes away to college and that some of us have to stay at home and live with our parents. I was just wondering how you guys dealt with it. I haven't even officially started school yet and I'm already ready to rip my hair out from dealing with my mother.

my mother is adamant when it coes to this subject. she thinks that the other kids will be a bad influence on me so she said that I'll have to live with them for the 6 years of college. I don't think that she's bother e much when I'm 20 or above though.. she's a pain right now becasue I'm still really young.

What you need is to renovate your basement into your own personal area. I'm doing this and it will keep mom and the grandparents away (they're moving in this spring). The cost of renovating my basement (which has had nothing done to it since we built the house ten years ago--it's still concrete walls and whatnot) will be about $19K. I looked at three more years of housing and combined it would be about that, maybe a bit less, but the basement is worth it because we will get more from the house when my mom sells it someday. You don't get to see a big return for your parents like that when you just pay a dorm fee.

If you choose to renovate a basement, you'll essentially make it like a one room apartment. I am going to add a bathroom, a huge walk in closet, a countertop for my computers and microwave (also will have my old fridge set up), and will put in some cable and phone outlets. I'm going to get a sofa and then just move the rest of my stuff down (including my kitchen table--not the new one in my kitchen but the old one that is now mine).

With a setup like this, you're pretty much guaranteed to not be disturbed/bothered by family members, you can have people over since the space is big, you just need to take people through the garage if you have a house like mine.

Boy, if I were you guys I would BEG to live at school!!!

After living in a dorm for like 2 weeks I miss taking a shower without flip flops, using the bathroom in privacy, home cooked meals, and quietness.

Everyone misses that stuff, but its part of experience. Just go with the flow. You'll appreciate those things more when you DO get to go home.

I would personally rather wear flip flops in the shower and be FULLY integrated into the college experience than leave everyone else after classes to go goof off while I slug home to my basement apartment.

I think it's a lot easier/better (?) to live at home when its not your first year. I'm living at home this year, mainly because I got shafted housing-wise by my new school after transferring, but I think liing on campus made my first year experience better than if I had not.

After the first year, I don't think it's that bad, but I guess I'll see in 11 days when I actually start classes. At least the 6,000 or so that I'm saving on room and board for this semester will be able to go towards something more important than overpriced dorm food and lofted beds.

I'd rather do all that than live with my parents.

Take out a loan if it means that much to you. Once your 18, your parents can't MAKE you stay at home for your college years. Living on campus/right next to campus on your own has so many advantages.

I live on campus, and I love it. Yes, until now I had my own room and a bathroom that I only shared with my sis at home, but the sacrafice was worth it. I come and go as I please, eat as much or as little of what I want, when I want, and if I'm bored I just walk over to see friends :). It's all good. Get a loan, move to a dorm!

I'm living at home my first year and really dont want to so I think I'm going to transfer out of school just to get away from home

sniff me too. I'm mostly saying this because i haven't lived with my parents since I was 16... (i'm a fresh in college now but) I mean they do drive me crazy sometimes but i do like my house.

My dorm isn't that bad though. The bathroom is usually empty and the showers are pretty clean. It's pretty quiet around here but i do miss the food. sniff. They don't have SONIC in Cali... I miss my smoothies (***)

That's what I was thinking about doing.

what's school you going to?

I lived in a dorm my freshman year, even though I live half an hour away. I have a scholarship that pays for it, but my mom still wanted me to live at home at first. I pretty much threatened not to go to college if she didn't let me move out. However, I lived at home this past summer and commuted and I hated every single minute of it! I don't know if it's just because I had the freedom and it was taken away all of a sudden, or what, but it was horrible. I really really recommend living away from your parents if at all possible. Alot of my friends from home stayed in our town and went to the local CC and lived with their parents and it's like they're still in high school. They are all older than me, but I feel like way more of an adult than they are. I also don't think I would've met all of my amazing friends if I didn't live here.

There are many sonics in Cali

Dude is obsessed with the sonic. God knows why, since it's completely atrocious.

^ I'm not a dude fyi. =_= And i'm not particularly obsessed with it, it's just something that i missed and popped into my head. Geez, I'm SORRY U DON'T like it.

I don't really eat anything else there except smoothies, LOL... which i love. I mean it's usually just quick and go .. and it was everywhere. so... I guess it's time to start drinking more boba (bubble tea luv luv) XD (if u read my other post i did mention there was sonic in cali.. only 20 miles away from me)

^ i made that thread after this.

Dude isn't necessarily a gender-specific term.

And really, I was kidding. It's ok.

-sigh- Does anyone have anything POSITIVE to say about living at home? I feel like I'm the only one out of some 30,000 people on campus who's going to be living with her parents.
