Living expenses...

NYU puts their room/board fee at 8000 dollars, but state the living expenses at 18000 a year.

Does that mean I would be spending ~24k a year OUTSIDE of tuition & fees!?

seems a bit ridiculously high...

Not sure where you're getting those figures but housing hasn't cost as little as $8000 in years. And the $18,000? Where did you see that? The general estimate for room and board for next year is $11,440 and that's obviously going to depend on which dorm you're assigned to and what mealplan you choose.

<a href="http://www.nyu.edu/financial.aid/tuitiontisch.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.nyu.edu/financial.aid/tuitiontisch.html</a></p>

Total budget estimates are around $47,000 and I can tell you that you should probably expect to spend more. Spending money and personal costs, as well as books and supplies for some programs, can easily put you close to $50,000 a year.

on the blue form they sent me it said "The value of room and board is $8000.00"

Well, I'm not sure why that figure would be on there because the dorm rooms alone, without mealplans, are more than that. Here's a link to the housing site which will allow you to see the different dorms and their respective charges. Mealplans are in addition to those figures.

The nicest dorms are all over $10,000 a year and the apartment style are over $11,000 so who knows where that $8000 figure came from.
