They overbooked the dorms and I was one of the ones that were overbooked so I was refunded my housing deposit and they told me to find an off campus apartment.

Am I going to miss out on a lot of things not living in a dorm?

Should I go to one of my other schools I applied too just to get the dorm life?

Does the 'dorm life' really matter?

Am I not going to have as much fun living in an apartment?

I am already stressed out as it is. Please be honest with me and let me know of any other necessary things that I should know or you want to let me know. Thanks!

Wow that is an interesting situation I did know one freshmen at my school who was placed into an apartment and besides the distance he seemed to like it. The apartments are much larger and nicer than dorms. I can see the drawback especially as a freshman most people in apartments are upper classmen while if you lived in a dorm especially for the first few weeks you would be able to meet alot of new freshmen who are also trying to make friends. Do you know if your apartment is going to be shared with other freshman guys? Also this may be a plus for you but the apartments at my school are where all of the parties take place. If WVU was your top choice I do not think that this should have a much alteration in your final decision especially since you probably dont have your other options open to you by now and you probably wouldnt get dorms now.

I wanna say you’re lucky cuz you get to live in a nice apartment as a freshman but then again you’re off-campus and will be a little farther from all the other freshmen. Unless you’re rooming with other freshmen, that’d be pretty chill I’d think.
Kinda bittersweet I guess

Lucky you! I resented living in the dorms. It can be fun at times, but I never warmed up to being kept awake at night when I had to get up relatively early the next morning.

If you live relatively close to campus, your apartment might actually become the social center of your friends! Just think of all the things you can do with extra space and a full kitchen.

Maybe you can get on waitlist for dorms and a month to month rental.

. If the apartment is close to campus and there are other students In the building you will probably love it. Maybe you can find roommate who is in the same boat as you. My daughter hated the dorms.

Apartment off campus > Dorms, RAs.
There’s significantly more freedom in living off campus. Unless you get screwed with expensive rent, it is so much better. If you can get a roommate or two, it is all of the perks of dorm life with the convenience and freedom of an apartment. Also, no crappy campus food if you don’t want it!

It won’t be a huge deal. Although I’m glad I lived in the dorms my first year, I’m excited to be living in an apartment next year. You’ll have to put in a bit more effort to meet people, but honestly, dorms have a lot more cons than pros. They’re loud, cramped, dirty, and overpriced. Don’t worry too much about it. An apartment should be fine.

As a rule, Freshmen who live off-campus tend to be less involved. But there’s no reason for that to be true in your case. You still go to sports games, events on campus, clubs, etc. Just try to make sure you remain social while you’re on campus. The only thing you’re forced to miss out on by living off campus is loud dorm parties keeping you up and annoying RAs telling you what to do and planning ice cream socials and crap. You can still eat in the dining hall, which is a great way to meet people, but since you’ll have a kitchen of some type in your apartment you won’t have to eat dining hall food all the freaking time. If you don’t want to be travelling back and forth to your apartment, you can always study in the library in between class/whatever you’re going to do. You can still be part of campus life, just make the extra effort.

Welcome to the mountaineer family, OP! I am a WVU sophomore who is living off campus this year, in a trailer with my best friend. I lived in honors hall last year. Honestly, the only dorms that I think are good are honors and Lincoln. I had several freshmen friends who lived off campus last year, they seemed to adjust just fine. Pretty much everyone moves off campus after the first year.

Every year more and more freshmen apply for housing. You really have to turn in your deposit early to be guaranteed a spot.

In my opinion, there are several pros to living off campus in Morgantown. You can save money by making your own food instead of buying a meal plan. Dining hall food isnt very good anyway. There are some apartments that are not only nicer than dorms, they are also cheaper. (However, be careful because the opposite is also true.) No RAs. More freedom. Your own space. You can get a pet. You can have more of the comforts of home. Fewer distractions (or more distractions, that’s your choice lol)

I did enjoy my year in the dorm. I met some very good friends. It was nice having friends under the same roof. However, I also met some people that drove me crazy and since we lived in the same hall I couldn’t avoid them lol. I also hated not having my own space. My RA kinda sucked too.

I would NOT recommend living in sunny side, especially freshmen year. There are plenty of apartment complexes, like the ridge, the district, the domain, campus park, west run, the lofts, and others I can’t think of. You can also rent a room in a house or trailer.

Send me a message if you have any other questions, I would be more than happy to help! Let’s go mountaineers!
