Living in Dykstra next year

Hi!

I'm going to be a freshman, and I'm in a triple in Dykstra. I know it's the last building to be renovated, that it's more social, and that everyone in it's moving to the new De Neve buildings after Christmas.

Is there anything else I should know/any advice people who were in Dykstra recently can offer? Anything you wish you'd brought/you brought and were glad you did?

Thank you so much!

Always keep your door open and take a chance in the beginning of the year to go door to door and introduce yourself. (Actually my year everyone met each other in the lounge when all 100+ people squeezed in…claustrophobic but fun.)

Since you are going to move to the De Neve buildings later, its even more important to meet people in the fall (easy in Dykstra thanks to the layout)

In general though, I was really glad I put myself out there and hung out with people as much as I did. There will be times when people will ask if anyone wants to get Diddy Reese in Westwood/play Frisbee outside/walk around campus/take a bus somewhere/etc: its easy to be lazy and stay in your room, but I’m glad I choose the former. Its these smaller moments that gets you closer to the floor and makes the year that much better. My floor is still very close three years later.

Anyway, take advantage of all the free time Freshman year and enjoy yourself! Its still my favorite year (entering senior)

PS: Don’t take the elevators + Bring a fan

Thank you so much! I’ll definitely remember that! =)

you are going to have so much fun in Dykstra! DEFINITELY bring a fan, and if your room is facing gayley, be prepared for it to get a little loud on Thursday nights if you have the window open. If I had to be up early on a Friday morning, I would sleep with earplugs (nerdy, I know, but better than not sleeping…for me, at least). Also, don’t worry about bringing a printer, since there is a computer lab downstairs that gives you $5 of free print credit, and is open from like 10am to 12am (there are other computer labs, with the same print credit, in Covel and Reiber, as well).
