Hi, I was accepted into UNC-CH and got into Honors Carolina. I decided to put my living preference as Koury (which is just for Honors freshmen) but now I'm having second thoughts. Has anyone here lived in Koury? What was it like? I'm afraid the atmosphere will be overly studious and, well, rather dull. Sorry if that sounds a bit rude! (Any insight is greatly appreciated).

Daughter lived in Horton, directly across from Koury. These buildings (Koury,Horton, Harding & Craig N.) are the newest and rooms are quite big for dorms. Her hall was a good balanced mix of study/party. Of course you overachiever Honors students may be different!!

Koury is next to Ehringhaus and the other high-rises in the mostly first-year populated south campus so there will be plenty of opportunities for interactions with “livelier” folks.

Hi! I’m in the same boat as you! I want to live in Koury and study with the other Honors Carolina kids, but I don’t want to be bored when I want to have fun and enjoy college life. I visited during the day and it was pretty quiet, but that makes sense because everyone was in class.
The dorm rooms are really nice and big, so as long as there are other freshman like you and me there who want to do more than just study, I am sure that it will be lively enough :)

wondering if anyone here wanted to check back in with their experiences freshman year…deciding between the more social freshman dorms & the quieter koury
Hey
So I created a Cc account just to reply to this thread. I was in a similar situation last year, and ultimately decided to live in Koury. To be honest, I think so many different factors play into your freshman housing experience apart from the building (roommate, suitemates, etc.). However, I will say this: I knew people living in almost every other dorm going in, but nobody in Koury, which forced me to meet new people. The honors dorm is not filled with nerds - it’s filled with people probably just like you. For instance, I met two kids in Koury this year who I’m now in a band with. So it definitely has its pros.
It’s not flawless though. Almost all the morehead cain and Robertson scholars live here and they all know each other from summer stuff, and also some of them are really clique-y. But some of them are amazing people and super friendly.
I think it comes down to this: in the high rise dorms, you’ll probably get to know 7 other people (your suitemates) really well. In the others (Koury included) you’ll get to know 3 others well and then a bunch of your hallmates not quite as well. Also you’ll make friends in other dorms and spend time there, and my friends who live in other dorms say they are jealous of mine haha.
Hope this helps.
I lived in Koury for 2013-14 and really, it depends on what you want from a social perspective and how active you’d be in trying to make friends outside of your dorm. Speaking from experience, if you’re placed on the first floor, I say get out ASAP. If it’s any indication, about 5 people left after fall semester for other dorms that year out of about the 30-40 of us that were on the floor. Social scene is dead in Koury overall and having half the people a normal floor has just exacerbates it.
At the same time, if you find yourself a studious person, Koury is one of the best dorms to be in with its study lounges and the ability to connect with other honors students to form groups that will keep you focused. Also, although you’re not confined to your dorm, if you want to hang out with other students outside of Koury in other dorms, I’d say it’s best to be in those other dorms. You have to be especially remarkable and outgoing for them to remember to invite you to events and in my opinion, it will be significantly easier to form connections with people that live in the same community.
That’s my two cents, take it for what you will. Hopefully you’ve made your decision by now, but if not, remember that you can always try to change dorms during winter break if you find you enjoy the community of a different dorm. Best of luck, OP.
[Edit] - I should’ve looked at OP’s post date. If any future Tar Heels find this though, my recommendation still stands.
