No…if you live in koreatown (or similar area) you will be 10 minutes from hollywood 15 minutes from the beach 10-15 from both schools, right near downtown, 15 minutes from silverlake/echo park. I cannot stress enough, you DO NOT want to live in palmdale. Work the 3-4 hours a day you would spend commuting, get a little pt job, live in the city, enjoy your life while you are young. Please please please.

. . or find a place by CSUN (Cal State Northridge)-- at least that will cut down on the commute by at least half-- and there are lots of apartments to rent in the SF valley . . . agree that you do NOT want to live in Palmdale if you can help it . . . and that commute will get real old, REAL fast.

CSUN might be better than CSULA

I think you guys are right. I will look into living in the city. Thanks.

Its always best to be as close to school as possible, but if you just cant make it happen you can commute. I just graduated UCSD and commuted from San Jacinto the entire time I went there (82 miles each way, 164 miles round trip). Its not impossible. Just arrange your schedule so that you only go on campus 2-3 times a week. Thats what I did and it worked out just fine for me. Im 28 and married with kids so I didnt care about the “college experience”.

Its obviously more convenient to live close to LA and the commute will suck for a while but you’ll get used to it. I graduated in less than two years and now im glad I chose UCSD over UCR (which is about 1/3 of the distance away). GET ER DONE!!

@USMC0311 See thats what I was thinking. The commute for me is no problem because I will be taking the bus, instead of driving. It seems like it would be worth it just to commute and save some money.

Here’s the web page on UCLA’s subsidized AVTA passes: [Antelope Valley Transit Authority (1004534)](http://map.ais.ucla.edu/go/1004534)

I live in LA and if I don’t get into UCLA then I will be making the commute to UCI twice a week. My plan is to try and avoid rush hour and also take the 73 toll road.

@sirinya Thats exactly what I was planning to do. Do you have experience with AVTA?

15 minutes to the beach from koreatown? No friggin way. During rush hour it takes 45 minutes to get to Santa Monica College from Koreatown, and it takes even longer to get to UCLA. Maybe if it’s on a Sunday night when everyone’s at home sleeping, possibly, but I bet you 10 dolla you wouldn’t be able to get to beach from Koreatown in 15 minutes. No way.

I commute by metro rail and Big Blue Bus to SMC from South LA and that trip is 80 minutes traveling, 15-40 minutes waiting.

No way you will be making the trip in 2 hours from way the hell out in Palmdale.

inb4OP gets rejected from UCLA…

wat?

Apartments in my neighborhood are about 900-1100 for biggggg one bedrooms and like 800 for studios. I live around Sunset/Gower. UCLA, for me, is just a drive down Sunset blvd. If I were to take the bus, it would be a 45 minute bus ride on one bus. Really not a bad deal. For a huge 1 bedroom, it’s like ~500 a person. I am sure you could scrounge that up. Think about it.

Open up a new tab, get to padmapper.com, and start a-huntin’!

P.S. I pay 1100 for a 1000 sq ft apartment (NO JOKE!) with a freaking GRANITE ISLAND in my kitchen. I’m kinda spoiled, and I cook a ton so I don’t mind paying a little extra for more space/amenities - but you could probably make do with 700sq ft or something.

If I had to share a room with someone, I would die. But those prices for off Sunset aren’t bad at all.

@natjan

But he’s sharing a room with his girlfriend, so… haha.

a little off topic but, how much in loans can I take out when I transfer to a UC. I just want to make sure I will have enough to pay rent if I decide to move to the city.

@ThatGuy90 - I don’t have any experience with AVTA, but one of my colleagues does. What I hear is that it is a good service overall – it’s reliable in the morning, less so in the evening (it can arrive between 5-20 minutes, depending on traffic). There are vanpools, but if you’re a student only coming to campus a few times a week, it might not make sense to do that.
