Riverside is much cheaper than West/North Campus and some of the apartments are nice, furnished, all utilities paid etc.

Obv the downside is that it is far and you have to commute or take the shuttle. Pretty much everything going on is at or near UT, so I might be distancing myself from the whole college experience.

What do you all think? Is Riverside worth it?

When you refer to “not the best part of town” you are referring to the fact that there are lots of NAMs living in Riverside. Take this into consideration. The good part of having lots of NAMs around is the El Pollo Rico drive-thru. Chicken+tortilla+salsa+beans w/pork fat=<3. Not to mention, it’s cheap.

You can get a nice and fairly new apartment with a private bathroom for 400~ at Riverside.

A lot of UT students live at Riverside, so you wouldn’t be distancing yourself from the whole college experience at all. Lots of big parties there.

The transportation to campus is a big problem. While the actual distance between UT and Riverside is only around 6 miles, the traffic is notoriously bad, and shuttle rides can often take 40 minutes+, which doesn’t bode well for punctuality issues.

So it’s up to you whether you think the trade offs are worth it.

Riverside is not tha bad. I can sae lot o mne and transportaion isn’t hrible, its not t bes, but not ad either. There are many students who live on Riverside and the apartments lie Longhorn Landing re decent and affordable.

I’ve lvedhere for close to year andnothing bad has happned t m nor my roomate and I like it here. I would recommend i if money is a concern.

I’ve heard really terrible things about places like Longhorn Landing (cheap build quality, terrible management, poorly kept, unsafe). I would not live in that area.

i’ve lived there for last semester, and moved out this semester.
the main reason: too far, not convenient to get to school.
Especially if you dont have a car.

NAM is an acronym for “non-Asian minority,” and it’s a significant distinction from just “minority” because Asians (including Indians) don’t cause any social problems (except to make upper-middle-class white parents fret that their children’s math classes are too hard because the Asian students are ruining the curve).

-As defined by the blogger known as Half Sigma

Transportation can be a pain at times, which is why Riverside has two buses to get you to school. BTW, there are other places you can live (e.g. Cameron Rd, Lakeshore, etc) so check some of the places out and see how the apartments look from the outside and inside.

Apartment owners and management like to take advantage of college students and will rip you off. For example, just because an apartment unit is close to UT doesn’t gurantee that it will be safe or a nice area to live in so just do your homework and look around.

As for the “NAMs”, there is a whole bunch of them at Longhorn Landing and The Ballpark. Yes, Riverside is dominated by Mexicans but there is a large population of Asian students who live there.
