Having done surmountable research on the residence halls at Cal Poly, it comes down to one of two things. Do you want to dorm with people within your major or would you prefer diversity. I couldn’t come up with a clear answer myself because both sides have their advantages and disadvantages. Study groups would be easy with people within your college of study, but the social aspect of people from other majors could also be fun.

I’m still thinking whether I should go for Santa Lucia/North Mountain or Sierra Madre/Yosemite, and yes I mentioned Santa Lucia because I’m an engineering major.

If current students read this, please give us your opinions and class of '11 admits feel free to voice in

I would recommend going to one of the open houses so that you could see the dorms for yourself. As a current student I personally prefer Sierra Madre over Santa Lucia. The rooms in Santa Lucia are dark and slightly smaller than the rooms in Sierra Madre. I'm not a fan of the redbrick in the rooms either. I also prefer the diversity and the size of the buildings of Sierra Madre. Since the towers in Sierra Madre are smaller than Santa Lucia you are more likely to get to know everyone in you dorm. So, there is a closer community with evetyone in your tower. It depends what your looking for. If an open, comfortable, diverse, social, aesthetically appealing environment is important to you then I would go with Sierra Madre. If you prefer a dark room with redbrick but with student from your own college and study groups go with Santa Lucia.

Man what are you talking about... I live in santa lucia and it is not dark. I felt like I was in prison when I go to the yosemite/sierra madre dorms.

My opinion, checkout north mountain. Okay, you don't really got the dorm life as living in red bricks or the prisons but, as school progresses you'll realize that you'll enjoy sharing bathrooms with less people, and have a much bigger room.

yes our rooms in the red bricks are small.

Oh well off to cerro vista for me next year

Is santa lucia a residence hall? I looked at the residence website and all I can find are sierra madre, yosemite, south mountain, and north mountain.

They may look like prisons from the outside, but the rooms are way better than any pof the south mountain dorms. First of all the rooms are bigger. Secondly the bathrooms are a lot cleaner and nicer in sierra madre than in Santa Lucia. Also the rooms are brighter because the rooms have larger windows and are mostly white instead of redbrick.
